The Truck Operator primary duties are to maintain the state and county highways of Wood County, operate assigned truck in a safe manner while transporting construction materials (such as gravel, sand, asphalt, dirt, etc.) to or from job sites, plow snow as needed or assigned, and perform road maintenance including patching and crack filling, mowing, sweeping, and flagging.

• On a daily basis, conduct a pre-trip inspection as outlined in the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to include but not limited to, inspect all signal lights, check tires for proper air pressure, hoses, check backup horn, and all other safety equipment, etc. Maintain truck by greasing, oil changes, wash windows and lights so they are visible.
• Perform all elements of highway and road maintenance including repairing potholes and cracks, removing debris, brushing, shoulder repair, power sweeping pavement, culvert repair and cleaning, seal coating pavement, repairing concrete, maintaining road signs, ditch cleaning operations, and mowing operations.
• Drive to pits or quarries to obtain loads. Maintain a position in line and stay in line while waiting for load.
• When truck is being loaded, monitor loading procedures. Ensure that the load is distributed evenly on axles, meeting legal requirements.
• Determine destination and follow routes laid out for project.
• Be available when weather and road conditions demand attention.
• Transport loads in a safe, responsible manner. Drive at legal speeds, obey all traffic laws, and deliver loads on time.
• Plow, salt, and shovel snow from roads and bridges, keeping them in safe driving condition. Determine the appropriate application and amount of the snow removal agent and complete the application. Assess plow blades and replace as needed.
• Install/erect snow fences and remove/dismantle snow fences.
• Perform manual labor tasks such as shoveling, lifting, or sweeping associated with highway maintenance and construction work.
• Respond to emergency situations such as, but not limited to, motor vehicle accidents, downed trees or branches that are blocking roadways, flooding of roadways and snow removal, replacing/repairing damaged signs, and collaborate with law enforcement to set up detours during accident clean-up.
• Perform flagging operations for work zones and accident scenes, place proper work zone signage according to state guidelines, determine the best routes for detours, and place barricades to implement detours and road closures.
• Responsible to know and practice the Safety policies of the County. Perform all job tasks in a safe and prescribed manner.
• Must be familiar with and exemplify the Wood County Core Values and serve with courtesy and respect in accordance with the Wood County Code of Conduct.

• Must obtain flagger certification provided by the department.
• Flagging, cutting brush, operating chainsaws, and chipper. Operation of the power broom and occasional operation of end loaders.
• Participate in other jobs at the work site when not in the truck.
• Fill in for Night Watch Person as needed.
• Operate front end loader.
• Any other duties as may be assigned.

High school education is required. Must be 18 years of age. Possession of, and maintained while employed with Wood County Highway Department, a valid Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class A, with the “N” endorsement with zero restrictions required, or ability to acquire within 90 days. Possession of a safe driving record and the ability to maintain one while employed by Wood County.
