Job Title:
Sales Tax Accountant
Position Summary:
Wausau Tile is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Sales Tax Accountant to join the Accounting Department in our Rothschild, WI office. This position is responsible for supporting sales and use tax compliance, business license and personal property tax filings, commission calculations, general ledger account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, and other accounting functions. The Sales Tax Accountant will help ensure accurate and timely tax filings, financial reporting, and accounting transactions while supporting compliance with applicable laws, company policies, and internal controls.
The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, curious, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment while contributing to continuous process improvement and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
General Account Responsibilities:
Calculate and review monthly sales commissions.
Maintain commission schedules and supporting documentation.
Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries.
Perform monthly general ledger reconciliations.
Investigate and resolve account discrepancies and aged reconciling items.
Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
Prepare account analyses and supporting schedules.
Tax Compliance & Reporting:
Assist with the preparation and timely filing of sales and use tax returns.
Assist with business personal property and business license tax filings.
Assist with annual reports and other required tax filings.
Process and maintain tax compliance filings and related documentation.
Confirm compliance with applicable sales and use tax requirements.
File and maintain tax exemption certificates and related documentation.
Reconcile tax accounts as required to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Conduct tax research to support compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.
Audit & Compliance Support:
Support state and local tax audits by gathering requested documentation and information.
Research tax requirements and assist in identifying potential compliance issues.
Maintain accurate records and documentation to support tax filings and audit requirements.
Assist with monitoring changes in applicable tax laws and regulations.
Training & Process Improvement:
Conduct training and provide guidance to employees regarding sales tax requirements and processes.
Support process improvements designed to increase operating efficiency and accuracy.
Assist with the implementation of improved tax processes, procedures, and best practices.
Assist with other accounting and tax-related tasks or special projects as assigned.
Specific Tasks:
Prepare and review sales and use tax filings.
Assist with business personal property and business license tax returns.
Process annual reports and other regulatory filings.
Maintain sales tax exemption documentation.
Reconcile tax accounts and investigate discrepancies.
Gather documentation and provide support during state and local tax audits.
Research sales and use tax requirements as needed.
Communicate tax requirements and provide sales tax training to applicable employees.
Identify opportunities to improve tax compliance processes and operating efficiency.
Complete other duties and projects as assigned by the Controller.
Qualifications:
Required
Experience and Skills:
One year of related accounting or tax experience preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and changing work environment.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Motivated, confident, resilient, and curious.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent interpersonal skills.
Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and embrace established best practices.
Ability to conduct tax research and apply applicable tax laws and regulations to business activities.
Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
