Within the County organization, the Door County Library provides accessible information, educational resources, and community services through eight library branches located across the county. Serving residents, visitors, and users of all ages, the library system offers print and digital materials, public technology access, research tools, and a wide range of programs that support learning, literacy, and community engagement. The Door County Library participates in OWLSnet, giving patrons access to materials from dozens of libraries throughout the region.

Library services include public computers, wireless internet, interlibrary loan, self-check options at select branches, and technology-focused programming. Several branches also offer meeting spaces for community use and maintain local history collections that support research and preservation of regional heritage. Through these offerings, the Door County Library provides safe, welcoming spaces that promote knowledge, discovery, and connection across the county.

To continue this important work, we are seeking a candidate who will perform the responsibilities outlined in the job summary and contribute to our efforts in serving the community.

This position is 10 hours per week.

Job Summary

The Circulation Assistant supports public access to library resources by performing routine clerical, customer service, and technical support tasks at library branches. This role contributes to the efficiency and welcoming atmosphere of the library through circulation services, user assistance, shelving, and ensures accurate data entry and recordkeeping in alignment with library policy and procedures.

  • Processes the checkout and return of library materials using the circulation software.
  • Provides basic support to patrons using equipment such as photocopiers, microfilm readers, desktop computers, audiovisual equipment, e-readers, and mobile devices; demonstrates usage as needed.
  • Receives payment for overdue charges and damaged materials and issues receipts.
  • Answers incoming calls, provides information, and routes inquiries to appropriate staff members.
  • Issues and updates library cards by verifying patron information and accurately entering data into the system.
  • Maintains library operations during assigned shifts, which may include working independently as the sole staff member on-site; monitors the facility, enforces library policies, addresses routine issues, and refers non-routine or escalated matters to supervisory staff.
  • Maintains library collections by sorting, shelving, retrieving, and organizing materials in accordance with classification systems and established procedures.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as alphabetizing, filing circulation or registration records, and updating service logs.
  • Retrieves library materials to fulfill patron or staff requests.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally in both written and verbal interactions with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Customer Service: Engages respectfully and efficiently with diverse patrons to support positive user experiences.
  • Attention to Detail: Accurately manages circulation transactions, records, and data entry with minimal errors.
  • Technical Proficiency: Operates library software systems, basic office equipment, and digital reading devices, and varying mobile devices.
  • Communication: Explains procedures, policies, and technology use clearly to patrons and coworkers.
  • Teamwork: Cooperates with colleagues and supervisors to maintain smooth daily operations.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies and resolves routine issues independently and refers complex problems as appropriate.
Required Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of experience using personal computers, preferably including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to learn and operate library-specific software systems.
  • Working knowledge of tablets, e-reading and mobile devices, with the ability to explain and support their use.
  • Valid drivers license.
Preferred Education & Experience
  • At least one (1) year of experience working in a customer service or public-facing role.
  • Previous experience in a library or similar public service setting.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
