We are seeking a Construction Superintendent to join our grading and excavation operations. As the strategic link between the office and the field, you will be the technical authority on-site, ensuring that the project meets precise engineering standards and operates efficiently with material, labor, equipment and subcontractors. PLM has over 120 employees, and this position would work with multiple crews daily, partnering with our Concrete and Asphalt Superintendents to deliver high quality pavements to our customers.
PLM provides maintenance, rehabilitation and construction of asphalt and concrete parking lots with supporting site work, grading and excavation. The ideal candidate possesses a deep mastery of grade setting and construction staking, paired with the leadership grit required to manage multiple field foremen and a complex heavy equipment fleet.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Surveying & Staking:
Directly oversee or perform construction staking and verify control points. Translate blueprints into physical reality with accuracy. - Grade Setting:
Establish and maintain grades for mass excavation, embankments, and fine grading. Ensure field operations adhere to specified slope requirements and drainage profiles. - Presence on active construction sites and a hands-on role requiring independent direction and a "whatever it takes" mentality.
- Directing Field Foremen:
Provide daily objectives to foremen, ensuring crews are optimized and safety protocols are non-negotiable. - Dispatch & Scheduling:
Assist the Project Manager and Dispatcher in moving heavy equipment and materials to minimize downtime. - Production Tracking:
Monitor daily material quantities against the project budget to keep the job financially on track. - Mentor and train field staff on labor, trucking and equipment operations.
- Coordinate with subcontractors, utility companies, and third-party inspectors.
- Conduct daily tailgate safety meetings and maintain detailed daily logs of site activities, weather conditions, and delays.
- Operate and perform physical work as necessary to maintain project requirements.
We seek a Construction Superintendent who will be the technical authority on-site, ensuring engineering standards are met and operations are efficient. The role involves coordinating with multiple crews and supporting subteam leads to deliver quality pavements.
Qualifications (Experience, Education & Certifications, Key Attributes)To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years in heavy civil construction, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role (minimum level: Foreman) specifically focused on grading and excavation. Additional understanding of concrete and asphalt pavement is preferred.
- Technical Literacy: Expert-level ability to read and interpret site plans, topographical maps, and cross-sections.
- Surveying Tools: Proficiency in grade setting using lasers; understanding of GPS and rovers is preferred.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to bridge the gap between field staff and management.
- License: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (CDL A preferred).
