Summary

The Pediatric Dentist provides comprehensive oral health care to infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special health care needs in accordance with the mission, policies, and clinical protocols of the Health Center. The individual actively participates in quality improvement activities including documentation, standards development, scheduling review activities, and professional orientation/training/education for support staff. The Pediatric Dentist will also serve as adjunct faculty for the involvement of students from dental and allied health educational programs and report activities to the Dental Director, clinical staff, and Board.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive pediatric dental services including preventive care, risk assessment, restorative treatment, pulp therapy as credentialed, minor oral surgery, behavior management, and/or referral of patients of the Health Centers during scheduled office hours and on-call hours
  • Assess, diagnose, treat, and/or refer pediatric patients in accordance with the clinical protocols adopted by the Health Centers, participating educational programs, and relevant Wisconsin statutes and Federal regulations
  • Provide age-appropriate preventive services including anticipatory guidance, oral hygiene instruction, nutritional counseling, fluoride therapy, and dental sealants
  • Manage dental trauma, infection, and urgent pediatric dental needs
  • Utilize evidence-based behavior guidance techniques to provide patient-centered, trauma-informed care
  • Collaborate with other professionals in the Health Centers for consultation, care coordination, and/or referral, including medical, behavioral health, and care coordination teams
  • Work closely with assigned dental assistants and Dental Operations Director to assure good work practices and efficient clinic flow
  • Serve infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special health care needs providing care to the well, injured, and ill in the Health Centers and other outreach locations as needed
  • Contribute to the development of documentation standards for quality improvement consistent with professional and Health Centers standards; and the performance of review activities for the quality improvement program
  • Participate with other clinical staff and patients in the development of quality improvement standards and pediatric clinical protocols
  • Serve as liaison between the Health Centers and participating educational programs related to pediatric dentistry and allied health
  • Participate in the design and delivery of orientation, training, and continuing education for dental staff
  • Keep current in the field through reading appropriate journals, participating in educational opportunities, and networking with professional peers
  • Attend OSHA training annually and observe policies and procedures as they pertain to OSHA standards and guidelines
  • Maintain knowledge of the location of SDS sheets, emergency medical kits, dental policy and procedure binders
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with on-call procedures
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the EDR with direct responsibility for completing progress notes, billing procedures, and updating health histories for each patient
  • Maintain knowledge of pediatric dental equipment, materials, and supplies required for all procedures
  • Maintain knowledge of coverage by Healthy Neighbor Plan, Forward Health (Badger Care), and private insurance plans, including required prior authorizations for pediatric dental services
