This is a regular full-time non-exempt position

Job Summary:

Serve as an Assistant Teacher for Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms. Responsible for replacing teachers during their scheduled breaks and office time and providing implementation of educational programs which always reflect best practices. Integration of Ojibwe language and culture into curriculum is critical along with ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children.

Examples of Duties

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality of all child and family information and records.
  • Promote a safe, nurturing, and stimulating physical environment for children, establishing and maintaining consistency of rules.
  • Assist teachers with observations, preparing lessons and implementation daily using the program's software.
  • Maintain accurate daily records on attendance, nutrition, and medical log, children's eating/sleeping/toileting information for child file and guardians using standard program forms.
  • Participate in mealtimes with children in a family setting with at least one other teacher, sitting at the table interacting with the children.
  • Maintain and document all contacts with families. Develop and maintain a professional relationship with parents of children enrolled in program.
  • Classroom sanitizing and laundry to be conducted according to schedules and needs, including diapering.
  • Assist the family, child, and program staff in developing an Individual Family Services Plan (IFSP) or Individual Education Plan (IEP) for special needs children.
  • Utilize positive child guidance techniques when needed.
  • Collaborate with staff, parents, and community resources to incorporate Ojibwe language and culture into daily activities and curriculum.
  • Work with Tribal and community service providers to provide necessary services to the child and their parents, families.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings and any other meetings as requested and/or job-related training as required.
  • Maintain continuing education as determined by the Center Directors, State of Wisconsin, and the Office of Head Start.
  • Notify supervisor in advance of any known absences you will have.
  • Adhere to all ECC policies and procedures and ensure the Federal Performance Standards and State of WI Group Child Care Licensing Regulations are met.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to help meet the needs of children, families and other staff.
  • Must be willing to help in other classrooms to ensure compliance of staff to child ratios.
  • Staff are expected to perform any other job-related duties as directed.
  • Bus monitor duty (when transportation is available at the Center).

    Typical Qualifications

    Knowledge:
    Knowledge of Ojibwe language and culture preferred; knowledge of uniqueness of Red Cliff community required.

    Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma, HSED or GED required.
  • Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education or CDA credential is highly desirable or must enroll in an associate or bachelor's degree program in Early Childhood within the first six months of employment. The program may be able to support employees in obtaining their credentials and higher education as part of employment.
  • Must complete courses required by WI State licensing rules within the first three months of employment. These may include Introduction to Child Care Profession, Skills and Strategies for the Child Care Teacher, and Fundamentals of Infant and Toddler Care.
  • Prior experience (formal or informal) and strong desire to work with children and families are required.
