Elementary Ojibwe Immersion Teaching Assistant

Job Goal:
The School District of Bayfield seeks individuals of the highest caliber whose creativity, enthusiasm, and energy inspire those around them. We are looking for a dedicated professional to work with students in our Ojibwe Immersion Program who are energetic, collaborative, patient, and highly skilled. Successful candidates will demonstrate initiative and the ability to work effectively with teachers, related service providers, and administrators.

Under the direct supervision of the Elementary Principal and our certified Ojibwe Immersion staff members, to assist with students in the classroom to promote student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise and assist students in classrooms and during lunch, recess, transportation, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and refer parent questions to appropriate certified staff.
  • Assist with processes and procedures, including, but not limited to, emergency procedures, building orientation, student vulnerability, data collection, and classroom management.
  • Assist students in academic areas such as reading, writing, and/or math.
  • Support licensed teachers in the implementation of a variety of behavioral management techniques and social emotional supports as needed and collect data regarding student progress in this area.
  • Supporting students with functional needs (self-care, mobility, etc.) as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher and administration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to understand Ojibwemowin and working knowledge of cultural practices, customs, and traditions.
  • Willing to use Ojibwemowin at all times to interact with staff and students in the program.
  • Willingness to work outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to participate in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training in order to attain certification.

Qualifications Profile:

  • Conversational use and understanding of Ojibwemowin.
  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.
  • Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
    Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of examination as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act.
  • Prior experience working with children is desirable.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a Special Education Program Aide License unless the individual holds any valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI) License. If a candidate does not currently hold said licensure, the application must be submitted within 30 days of employment.

Job Type: Full-Time School Year Salary: $26.06/hr Benefits:
