What You’ll Be Doing
The role of Automation Engineer II/Sr. focuses on designing, programming, assembling, and installing electrical controls for machines and tooling systems within Greenheck’s Machine Development Center (MDC). The position involves substantial hands‑on work and cross‑functional collaboration spanning mechanical, IT, and maintenance teams.
Responsibilities- 60% of the time – Manage medium‑sized machine installations
- Specify power requirements and component locations
- Request network connections and configurations
- Disconnect machines at MDC and reconnect them in the final location
- Coordinate tasks with IT, maintenance, mechanical designers, and other stakeholders
- Train maintenance personnel and automation & controls technicians
- Participate in preventive maintenance events as needed
- Travel to Greenheck locations for machine installs with minimal notice
- 25% of the time – Design and develop electrical and control systems
- Create electrical schematics and cabinet layouts using AutoCAD Electrical
- Write PLC/HMI/Robot programs using over 50 manufacturer software packages
- Build and wire electrical panels
- Document typical programs ranging from medium‑complexity coordinated motion to simple machine control
- 10% of the time – Support programming, BOM creation, and integration
- Develop bill of materials using manufacturer software
- Travel to facilities to install or repair machines and train personnel
- Perform design calculations for component sizing, overload protection, motor, wire, and circuit sizing
- Draw sheet metal parts with AutoCAD
- Collaborate with external control manufacturers for advanced solutions
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of NEC, CUL, CSA, UL, NFPA
70e, IEC, and related standards - Provide advanced troubleshooting for CNC machines and contact control manufacturers when necessary
- Write robot programs for new products and modify existing programs to improve efficiency, operator friendliness, and parts traceability
- Support machines built by outside manufacturers and integrate purchased machines with MDC systems
- Investigate and install monitoring equipment on purchased machines
- Modify purchased machines to meet company safety standards
- 5% of the time – Electrical design, compliance, and system enhancement
- Develop electrical parts lists and order parts for projects
- Wire external machine components to the electrical cabinet
- Design medium‑complexity guarding strategies compliant with OSHA and ANSI
- Work with IT application developers on program integrations and SAP coding
- Power up, troubleshoot, and commission machines for production readiness
- Integrate hydraulic and pneumatic systems into electrical control systems
- Provide post‑installation troubleshooting and support
- Support product development engineers with new products and field problem resolution, adhering to NEC, NFPA, and UL standards
- Assist in specifying electrical components for Greenheck products
- Support automation and controls technicians on their projects
- Provide parts lists, research safety devices, and deliver programming assistance
- Upgrade and retrofit MDC machines with new control systems and safety devices
- Add new functions and features to older machines to support new product requirements
