Location: Ladysmith
Rusk County is currently seeking applicants to fill a vacancy of a dispatcher/jailer position. The Dispatcher provides central dispatching of all emergency services (police, fire, ambulance, and human service providers) for the entire county and surrounding area. The jailer is responsible for maintaining the safe and secure operations of the Rusk County jail, the custody and correctional treatment of inmates, and the promotion of good public relations.
DispatcherResponsibilities
- Receive and/or initiate police, fire, and EMS telephone, radio, and teletype communications and dispatch requests for police, fire, ambulance, and other necessary services.
- Prepare, maintain, and update computer information on departmental complaints, computer‑assisted dispatching, and requests for fire, ambulance, and medical assistance.
- Use computer to acquire DOT information for law enforcement officers and criminal histories for the Department, D.A., D.S.S., and other county law enforcement agencies in accordance with State law as prescribed by the TIME system.
- Implement county and village weather warning watch programs and the city emergency warning system as necessary.
- Provide counter service to citizens such as providing information, furnishing proper forms, collecting bonds, traffic and ordinance fines, and maintaining records of these transactions.
- Have knowledge of essential building and jail mechanisms relating to utilities, locks and radio/telephone equipment.
- Obey all policies, procedures, rules, orders, and directives pertaining to the jail/dispatch division.
- Minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Completion of LESB Jailer certification, TIME I & II certification, and appropriate 24‑hour annual recertification.
- Ability to understand and follow directions in order to comply with county, state, and federal regulations.
- Basic reading, arithmetic, and computer skills for maintaining cash ledgers and inmate records.
- Ability to operate office, computer, and radio equipment efficiently.
- Ability to remain calm and clear‑minded in emergency situations.
- Strong communication skills and courteous, professional manner when assisting the public and fellow officers.
- Perform a variety of duties to ensure proper maintenance of the jail in accordance with department and state policies.
- Properly book inmates into the jail, including receiving and searching incoming inmates, recording and locking up valuables, and addressing basic or medical needs.
- Have direct and daily contact with inmates, monitor them at irregular intervals, and report any emergencies or special situations.
- Maintain security through observation of inmate behavior, discipline and counseling on institutional issues.
- Motivate inmates to learn and adhere to jail procedures and behavior expectations.
- Report misconduct, abnormal behavior, and prisoner grievances to supervisors.
- Prepare, maintain, and update records, files, and computer information on inmates and their status.
- Escort and transport inmates to and from various activities within and outside the jail.
- Safeguard prisoners' valuables and assist with admissions, classifications, and release processes.
- Supervise programs such as recreation, visitation, and maintain control of assigned areas.
- Provide and summon assistance for inmates while maintaining facility safety.
- Process and record all incoming and outgoing inmate mail.
- Supervise inmate visitation periods and provide health care via the jail nurse.
- Distribute medications, administer first aid, and CPR as required.
- Maintain financial records, including inmate and canteen funds, bail, and fines.
- Collect, maintain, and complete necessary records and reports (criminal history, medical screening, medication delivery, inmate activity, fingerprints, photographs, visitor logs, incident reports, etc.).
- Detect and prevent crimes, enforce laws.
- Prepare written reports such as incident reports, work orders, and memos of specific incidents.
- Search and observe inmates, visitors, vendors, inmate workers, and others for security.
