Emergency Medical Technicians possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients/residents ranging from non‑emergency and routine medical transports to life‑threatening emergencies. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. In an ambulance setting, the EMT will drive a mobile intensive care unit to a specified location, following instructions from an emergency medical dispatcher, respond to emergency calls, administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in pre‑hospital settings, obtain medical history and vital statistics, assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize patients for emergency needs and treatment procedures during transportation.

The EMT utilizes necessary medical equipment to treat the patient/resident, communicates with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information, arrange transfer of patients, report information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner, and receive instructions for further treatment. The EMT ensures the ambulance is clean, washed, and kept in neat orderly condition. After each call, the EMT restocks and replaces used linens, blankets, and supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures, checks all equipment to ensure readiness for the next run, and maintains ambulance in efficient operating condition.

The role requires considerable use of arms and legs and moving of the whole body, including climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Successful EMTs complete a state‑approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Services Education Standards, attend continuing education and training classes to maintain current certifications and/or licensure, and keep abreast of new developments in the field.

In a hospital‑based setting, EMTs under the direct supervision of a registered nurse will assist in performing patient/resident care services and support activities of the patient/resident care unit, demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department throughout its flow, anticipate workflow, and provide expanded bedside services. EMTs utilize appropriate age‑related patient/resident care protocols, interact with patients/residents to build rapport or provide emotional support, record and report crucial data to physicians, prepare equipment during basic examinations, and perform simple diagnostic tests.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited training program required for licensing.
• Must have a thorough knowledge of EMT principles, practices, and techniques, including knowledge of equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator and troubleshooting skills.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required; depending on location, a national registry status as an EMT or AEMT level may be required.
• State licensing may be required depending on state requirements.
• Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses: IC 100, 200, and 700; continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation.
• Valid driver’s license and a good driving record; must be 18 years or older; approval needed for those under 21 to drive (may not be required for hospital setting).
• Eligibility to work PRN shifts and vary weekly hours.
