Job Summary

Emergency Medical Technician possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients/residents ranging from non‑emergency and routine medical transports to life‑threatening emergencies. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. In an ambulance setting, the EMT will drive a mobile intensive care unit to a specified location, following instructions from an emergency medical dispatcher.

EMTs respond to emergency calls, administer first‑aid treatment or life‑support care to sick or injured persons in pre‑hospital settings, obtain patients’ medical history and vital statistics, and help assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize patient care during transportation.

EMTs utilize necessary medical equipment to treat patients/residents and ascertain the extent of injury or illness, communicate with dispatchers or treatment‑center personnel to provide information about the situation, arrange transfer of patients/residents, and report patient information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner. They also maintain ambulance cleanliness, restock supplies, disinfect equipment, and conduct pre‑run checks to ensure the ambulance is ready for the next run.

Physical activities include, but are not limited to, considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. EMTs must successfully complete a state‑approved Emergency Medical Technician course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Services Education Standards, attend continuing education and training classes to maintain current certifications and/or licensure, and stay abreast of new developments in the field.

In a hospital‑based setting, EMTs under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse assist in performing patient/resident care services and support activities of the patient/resident care unit. They demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department workflow, anticipate workflow, and are multi‑skilled to provide expanded bedside services. EMTs interact with patients/residents to build rapport and provide emotional support, observe and record vital signs, and perform simple diagnostic tests using aseptic techniques.

EMTs are responsible for maintaining equipment, ordering supplies, restocking treatment areas, and communicating directly with physicians, nursing staff, patients/residents, and families. They are required to report changes in the patient/resident’s condition, perform high‑quality Basic Life Support (BLS), and apply and use a LUCAS device during transport.

High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited training program required for licensing.

Must have thorough knowledge of EMT principles, practices, and techniques, and understand how various equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator works and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Depending on location, national registry status as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced EMT (AEMT) level may be required.

Depending on state requirements, individuals may need a state license. National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses ICS 100, 200, and 700 must be completed, along with continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation.

Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Must be 18 years or older; those under 21 require approval to drive (but may not be required for a hospital setting).
