The Prevention Specialist oversees all Injury Prevention programs and grants, addressing all aspects of injury prevention through planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of evidence-based strategies. This position serves as the primary lead for injury prevention efforts and provides programmatic oversight to ensure compliance with grant requirements, achievement of performance measures, and alignment with Health Department priorities, by committing to provide high-quality services to our tribal members and look forward to continuing to serve our community.

PERFORMANCE-BASED

JOB FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES

Develop and execute tactics to promote injury prevention for tribal members with assistance from departments within the Ho-Chunk Nation and outside agencies annually.

Conduct observational surveys annually in Ho-Chunk communities and collect data from the surveys as well as state and government agencies.

Apply for grant funding to operate the Injury Prevention Program as opportunities becomes available.

Research data and medical records to maintain the Ho-Chunk Nation's intentional/unintentional Injury data monthly.

Coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Ho-Chunk Injury Prevention Program. Compare data from previous years beside current data and state data annually.

Conduct group presentations, consultations, and guidance to staff, government entities, and community groups annually and upon request regarding all aspects of injury prevention.

Report and manage activities connected with the funding agencies as required per each grantor, typically semi-annually.

Must have or obtain Safe Kids Child Passenger Safety Training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Associates Degree or Certificate minimum education that is required.

Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.

ESSENTIAL:

Must have a valid driver's license, dependable transportation and proper insurance.

EXPERIENCE:

Must have experience in grant and budget management.

Must have experience in grant application and reporting processes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED

Must have thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the public health and public health education.

Must be able to analyze injury prevention data and develop strategies for risk reduction.

Must be able to do group presentations to various audiences’ injury prevention.

Must be able to work independently to organize and develop programs.

Must be able to maintain working relationships through collaboration via local, state and regional coalitions.

Must have skills in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.

Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Must understand risk communication.

Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with Department Policy, Privacy Act, and HIPAA regulations.

Must be aware of Ho-Chunk cultural traditions.

Must have excellent organizational skills.

The department manager ensures that all employees of the department receive appropriate training, counseling, and understand all of the applicable procedures so that they can safely do their assigned work.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires frequent physical activity.

Twenty percent to the work may expose the employee to extreme conditions.

Daily car travel may be required.

Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds.

Visual acuity and hearing are necessary for daily activities.

Must have a valid Wisconsin Drivers licenses and insurance.

Must be able to drive a variety of vehicles, include trucks and trailers.
