THIS IS A FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION

JOB SUMMARY:

The Certified Peer Specialist is a person with lived experience of mental illness and/or substance abuse, in recovery, who provides peer mentoring and peer support to others with mental illnesses and/or substance abuse. The CPS utilizes his/her training and personal recovery story to inspire and guide peers on their individual path to recovery. The goal is to promote wellness, self-direction, and enhance the skills and ability of peers to meet their chosen goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assure all clients sign into the facility upon arrival.

Assure healthy boundaries and ethics with clients at all times.

Participate in all Nooji Center events unless excused by your supervisor.

Monitor and record clients' progress to ensure that goals are met.

Confer with clients to discuss their options and goals so that recovery and relapse prevention is maintained and plans for accessing needed services can be developed.

Prepare and maintain records and case files, including documentation such as clients' personal and services provided, narratives of client contacts, and relevant correspondence.

Hand in all necessary paperwork on time.

Arrange for physical, mental, academic, vocational, and other evaluations to obtain information for assessing clients' needs and developing rehabilitation plans.

Confer with physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, and other professionals to develop and implement client rehabilitation programs.

Develop and maintain relationships with community referral sources, such as schools and community groups.

Maintain close contact with clients during job training and placements to resolve problems and evaluate placement adequacy.

Locate barriers to client success in recovery and employment, such as inaccessible work sites, inflexible schedules, and transportation problems, and work with clients to develop strategies for overcoming these barriers.

Collaborate with community agencies to establish facilities and programs for persons with disabilities.

Collaborate with the mental health professionals, AODA counselors, service facilitators in a professional manner.

Meet all training requirements per state Peer Specialist regulations.

Present a professional, caring image for the Center and its programs.

Maintain a cooperative relationship with other staff and co-workers.

Demonstrate tact, courtesy, and respect in communication and interaction with Center community members, visitors, and staff and with outside agencies and programs

Promote a working environment noted for effective cooperation and collaboration between programs, services, and co-workers

Assist the Project Coordinator as needed in his/her assignments.

KNOWLEDGE:

Good interpersonal skills and the ability to get along with diverse populations (clients, co-workers, professional staff, administration and the public)

Excellent communication skills, written and oral

Ability to operate standard office machines

2 years computer knowledge.

Knowledge of and sensitivity for Ojibwa culture and traditions

Work experience or volunteer activities in the field of substance abuse treatment preferred

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma, GED or HSED.

Wisconsin Peer Specialist certification preferred or must complete within 3 months of employment.

Abstinence from alcohol/drug use is required upon employment and while employed in this position.

Must have a history free of alcohol and/or drug use for at least one year, two years preferred.

Due to the requirement of abstinence, there may be random drug screening.

Must have a valid driver's license, vehicle and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver's eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the tribe's vehicle insurance policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The duties assigned to this position involve bending, stooping, lifting and carrying. Items may be placed on overhead shelving.
