Position Summary

This position description has been prepared to assist in evaluating duties, responsibilities, and skills of the position. It is not intended as a complete list of specific responsibilities and duties, nor is it intended to limit duties to those listed.

This position maintains the grounds, equipment and facility in a safe and efficient manner, in accordance with established procedures, and as directed by the Lead Facilities Maintenance Specialist.

This position is shared between all County buildings. The Lead Facilities Maintenance Specialist will determine where the employee reports and the weekly work schedule, which may include weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures to ensure that the maintenance of the facility and equipment is current at all times. Reviews policies annually.
  • Assures that the facility and equipment are properly maintained for safety, comfort and convenience of employees and visitors.
  • Performs routine maintenance on grounds, parking areas, driveways, etc. by cutting, trimming, pruning, sweeping, snow removal, etc. as necessary or instructed.
  • Attends in-services yearly (fire safety, inclement weather, etc.)
  • Follows all life safety codes as they relate to the facility.
  • Establishes an effective preventative maintenance program for all buildings with Lead Facilities Maintenance Specialist.
  • Established a priority system on unscheduled maintenance with Lead Facilities Maintenance Specialist.
  • Maintains the heating and cooling units/system is in proper working condition, as specified by manufacturer.
  • Maintains current written records of department maintenance, new equipment, installations, etc.
  • On-call for emergency situations
  • Coordinates fire drills per facility policy
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Related Job Functions
  • Independently maintain and repair buildings equipment and grounds.
  • Makes decisions regarding maintenance, repair and service of facility equipment under direction of Lead Facilities Maintenance Specialist.
  • Makes contacts with City and County department heads and managers, salespersons and local service persons.
Physical Demands
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts, pushes, pulls, and moves intermittently during work hours
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions
  • Is willing to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily or when necessary.
  • Is subject to cuts, bruises, falls, a burn from equipment, odors, etc.
  • May be subjected to infectious diseases, substances, contaminated articles, etc.
  • May be required to work in cramped spaces
  • Is required to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Is required to be ON-CALL for emergency conditions/situations.
  • Is able to speak the English language in an understandable manner
  • Is able to lift, push, pull, and move heavy equipment and supplies throughout the workday.
Education and Training Requirements

High school graduate or GED; 1-2 years vocational experience and 2 or more years of maintenance work in a medium-size building. In evaluating candidates for this position, the County may consider a combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

HVAC, plumbing, or electrical certifications required or the ability to obtain within one year from date of hire.

Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation with adequate auto insurance to meet minimum County requirements, or access to reliable transportation for city and rural travel.
