Summary

The RN is responsible for the provision of total patient care to a designated number of adult patients through use of the nursing process. The RN directs and guides patient teaching, maintains standards of professional nursing, and performs other functions as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Regularly assesses patient’s needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based nursing practice.
  • Provides direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.
  • Complies with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines as well as hospital specific policies and procedures relating to care provided in the medical center.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supports the mission, goals, policies and standards of nursing.
  • Recognizes, supports, and implements hospital and nursing policies and work rules.
  • Maintains patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Reflects bio psychosocial nursing care in performance and documentation.
  • Complies with Joint Commission, Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), Michigan Department of Mental Health (MDMH), Health Information Portability and Protection Act (HIPPA), Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) guidelines.
  • Attends monthly department meetings or reads the minutes.
  • Completes Quality Assessments (QA’s) on time.
  • Implements, revises, and updates plan of patient care at least 48 hours and PRN per patient’s needs.
  • Delegates appropriate aspects of care to other members of the health care team.
  • Assists with the orientation of new & recently transferred staff and fosters continued development.
  • Directs and preceptors nursing students when appropriate.
  • Provides and ensures safe and secure environment for the patient.
  • Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Actively participates in the interdisciplinary care of the patient.
  • Demonstrates effective and pleasant interpersonal relations in providing excellent customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Registered Nurse (RN) – Current license in the State of Michigan.
  • Telemetry Competency – Telemetry Monitoring & Management class with passing score within 12 months of hire.
  • Fingerprinting (FINGERPRIN)
  • Advanced Aggression Management – Techniques for Effective Aggression Management within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification).
Required Education

Associates Degree. BSN preferred.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS
  • System Med/Surg Pathway;
    Introduction to cardiac care, Telemetry monitoring and management, Care of the Medical Patient, Care of the Bariatric Patient, Care of the surgical patient.
  • Dysphagia, Transfer training and FIM training required within 30 days of hire or transfer and annually thereafter.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels.

    South Unit education/orientation within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience as a Registered Nurse preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Exposure to stressful situations, trauma, grief and death. Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute. Must be able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time with occasional postural changes.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and stay awake. Overall dexterity required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must occasionally lift or carry 21-50 lbs.,

frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and/or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
