The position works on an intermittent or sporadic basis, subject to call, with limited expectation of a regular work schedule.
Under general supervision of the Jail Sergeant, responsible for supervising inmates of the Calumet County Jail assuring a safe and secure environment, while adhering to all applicable laws, policies and procedures. Performs related duties as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Maintain security of the jail to ensure the safety and well‑being of inmates and staff, according to all applicable laws, policies and procedures. Keep the jail area clean and orderly.
- Takes custody of, books, and releases inmates by performing tasks such as fingerprints, photographs, searches, and inventories of personal belongings; assigns and escorts inmates to cells; issues uniforms, bedding, personal products and supplies; ensures proper placement of inmates in the facility; and releases inmates upon posting of bail, signing of signature bond, direction of an appropriate authority, or for work‑release purposes.
- Maintain jail security by making periodic rounds, conducting security inspections and searches of inmates and inmates' quarters for contraband and any unauthorized/dangerous materials; maintain surveillance of all inmates and jail activities through visual and audible devices; enforce regulations and discipline policies related to the security and operation of the facility; conduct inmate counts and ensure inmates do not escape the facility.
- Establish and maintain continuing relationships with inmates watching for illegal activities or violations of jail regulations, unusual or suspicious behaviors, and signs of mental and physical illness.
- Provide medical, mental or other attention necessary for the inmates' welfare, according to established policies and procedures; dispense inmate medication and keep accurate records of such disbursements.
- Assist with the operation of the food service program as needed, and supervise all inmate workers assigned to the kitchen. Supervise cleaning, laundry, and daily hygiene according to established schedules and procedures.
- Respond to emergency situations according to departmental policies and procedures. Employ force to quell disturbances and maintain discipline. Take precautionary steps to prevent transmission of communicable diseases.
- Maintain Huber inmate compliance with Huber laws, rules and policies by checking in Huber inmates, verifying employment, conducting job‑site and home visits, managing the transfer of Huber inmates to or from other facilities, conducting random drug and alcohol testing, and depositing Huber funds.
- Transport prisoners to and from facilities, courts and medical/mental treatment facilities.
- Monitor and operate all equipment and alarms located in the jail control center. Assist or relieve radio operators as required. Administer Intoxilyzer test.
- Direct visitors. Coordinate visits with family, friends, clergy, attorneys, and probation and parole personnel. May conduct jail tours.
- Prepare and maintain proper and accurate records and reports. Collect and issue receipts for bail bonds and fine payments.
- Conduct vehicle examinations required by issuance of warning tickets. Obtain initial information on accident reports.
- Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public.
- Attend training and in‑service, as required.
- Ability to supervise the activities of adult inmates and deal with situations requiring tact, fairness, firmness and good judgment.
- Ability to supervise and assist with the immediate evacuation of inmates during emergencies.
