Position Overview
LINEWORKER, MAINTENANCE (Lancaster, WI) – Union Hourly Wage Range: $37.91 - $52.50. Must relocate within 25‑air mile radius of Lancaster, WI.
The Lineworker, Maintenance is responsible for the safe inspection, maintenance, repair, and operation of the transmission line system, including transmission lines and substations in designated areas.
Dairyland is a generation and transmission cooperative that provides wholesale energy for 24 electric distribution cooperatives and 17 municipal utilities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois.
Key Responsibilities- Perform all work in accordance with established safety rules, safety practices, work methods, company policies, and procedures.
- Safely inspect, operate, and maintain all transmission lines and substation facilities within a designated area, focusing on facility reliability and life expectancy.
- Climb transmission poles to install or replace conductors, insulators, hardware, cross‑arms, or attachments; conduct walking patrols to inspect lines for damage and obstructions.
- Execute line and substation switching procedures.
- Maintain vehicles, tools, and other Dairyland assets used in the work.
- Report problems, deficiencies, and conditions to the Area Supervisor and complete work requests to initiate workflow through the work‑management process.
- Coordinate issues with other departments (System Operations Center, Vegetation Management, Electrical Maintenance, Right‑of‑Way, Transmission/Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Safety).
- Plan, prioritize, and schedule all maintenance activities and coordinate with the area supervisor.
- Participate in pre‑job and post‑job briefings.
- Build positive relations with other utilities, property owners, and the public.
- Document work activity and completion using systems such as Dynaway, D365 Work Order Management, and TREM.
- Assist in training co‑workers on safety rules, policies, switching, maintenance, and all work‑related procedures.
- Perform any other duties historically performed by this classification.
- High School Diploma or GED; completion of a recognized accredited lineworker program. Journeyman status preferred.
- Two (2) years of transmission line construction experience preferred (maintenance experience acceptable).
- Knowledge of personal protective grounding methods, switching, patrolling, documentation, substation fuse replacement, line and substation maintenance and repair.
- Ability to identify outage‑causing issues, initiate preventative measures, troubleshoot, and restore service during outages.
- Proficiency in pole and steel climbing, understanding of electricity theory and associated principles.
- Computer skills necessary; good written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license;
Class A commercial driver’s license.
- Operate small and large trucks, basket truck, derrick, end loader, and UTV/ATV.
- Manipulate/operate air compressor, hot sticks, hydraulic tools, shovel, cant hook, protective ground, hand tools, insulators, anchors, cross arms (weighing up to 100 lbs), wire, rope, and radio.
- Occasionally climb poles or stand in a hydraulic bucket to work at a height of 55 feet or more, often in awkward positions.
- Lift materials and equipment up to 50–100 pounds; perform pole‑top and bucket rescue.
- Shovel dirt, work around noisy equipment, and visually inspect work; occasionally work with energized lines per NESCO/OSHA and DPC safety practices.
- Work at night, on weekends and holidays.
- Off‑duty availability may be required.
- Primary living location: must relocate/reside within 25‑air mile radius of the designated work location.
