Rolling Stock Mechanic

The Rolling Stock Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing fleet vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. This role performs both preventative maintenance and complex repairs across a variety of mechanical systems. Success requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

Diagnose and repair rolling stock equipment, including trucks, trailers, cranes, and forklifts.

  • Perform repairs on mechanical systems such as brakes, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical components.
  • Rebuild and replace parts including bearings, gears, valves, and related components.
  • Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance, including inspections, servicing, and tune-ups.
  • Perform welding and fabrication using stick and MIG welding processes.
  • Maintain parts inventory and coordinate ordering of necessary replacement components.
  • Operate equipment such as forklifts, overhead cranes, and other machinery as needed.
  • Safely move vehicles and equipment within the yard.
  • Test equipment to confirm proper operation before returning to service.
  • Follow established procedures and complete work accurately and efficiently.
  • Support facility maintenance activities as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and adhere to safety standards.

The ideal candidate is an experienced heavy equipment mechanic with a strong background in diagnosing and repairing fleet vehicles. They are detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and capable of managing both routine maintenance and complex repairs. This individual is dependable, adaptable, and committed to maintaining equipment performance and supporting operational success.

  • Proven experience repairing and troubleshooting heavy equipment and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and procedures.
  • Experience using a CMMS system for tracking maintenance activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret OEM manuals and technical documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to work across teams.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environments and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Experience working safely in industrial settings and varying weather conditions.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to document maintenance activities accurately.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to follow direction and work independently.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to maintain composure under pressure.

Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 75 lbs occasionally and frequent bending, climbing, kneeling, twisting, squatting, crawling, and repetitive hand/arm use

  • Capable of standing, walking, and moving throughout the facility for extended shifts of up to 12 hours
  • Comfortable working at heights using ladders, scaffolding, swing stages, and man lifts frequently
  • Ability to work safely in a production or field environment with moderate to high exposure to safety risks and hazards
  • Willingness to work in varying environmental conditions, including wet, hot, humid, and cold weather, and outdoors (Depending on location)
  • Ability to wear all required PPE, including but not limited to safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, high visibility vest, hard hat, and other PPE as required by the task, department, or work area.
