Position

Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Scope of Work

Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench‑digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects; dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists and hand tools; examines parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges;

replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions; and tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency. The mechanic welds broken parts and structural members, and may coordinate workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with the assembly and disassembly of equipment.

Requirements
  • Personnel must possess or be able to obtain a favorable security clearance before the start of work.
  • A civilian driver's license is required.
  • A minimum of three years' experience in vehicle mechanic services in either gasoline or diesel engines and related vehicle systems such as electrical, hydraulic, air systems, heating & air conditioning (HVAC), to include powertrain, steering, suspension, and braking.
  • Ability to manually lift equipment and components weighing 20 to 60 pounds. Occasionally, will manually lift items weighing 75 pounds and, with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices, over 100 pounds.
  • Skill in using and interpreting results of a wide range of diagnostic and test equipment, i.e., engine analyzers, dynamo meters, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector testers, ignition tuners, tachometers, ammeters, and ohmmeters.
Preferred
  • A background in military or civilian electronics is highly desirable.
  • Associated Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications highly recommended.
  • Ability to use technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics and similar guides to make repair and modifications.
  • Physically able to operate the unit's small forklift and become certified.
