School Bus Driver

Job Summary

School Bus drivers are responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and related events, picking up students at designated locations and dropping them off at school.

• Operate and safely drive a school bus in either good or adverse weather, road and traffic conditions while transporting passengers to school or special events; comply with traffic regulations while operating vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.
• Communicate bus rules, safety and behavior requirements to passengers and address improper behavior immediately using appropriate interpersonal communication skills.
• Communicate with students’ parents to solve inappropriate or unsafe behavior using strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Assist students and passengers boarding and unloading the bus when necessary, including wheelchair users and adaptive equipment.
• Inspect buses daily to identify and report deficiencies; perform vehicle maintenance procedures such as checking fluid and fuel levels, tire pressure, cleaning internal and external areas, installing tire chains, and other daily maintenance as required.
• Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort.
• Know and comply with all rules, regulations (Federal, State and District) concerning operation of a school bus and all applicable traffic regulations.
• Comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
• Complete all records and reports timely and accurately and submit them to the Transportation Department.
• Read maps, follow written and geographic directions according to route/trip logs.
• Operate a two‑way radio.
• Maintain cleanliness to ensure safe operating conditions.
• Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

• Class A or B CDL, or the ability to obtain one.
• Endorsements:
  Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) or as required.
• Ability to pass a medical examination.
