CNC Lathe Machinist – 2nd Shift
This role focuses on the setup and operation of CNC lathes in a modern, high-precision manufacturing environment. You will work with Mazak equipment and Mazatrol controls to produce high-quality parts that meet tight tolerances and customer specifications. The position requires strong technical skills in CNC setup, programming edits, and inspection, as well as the ability to work efficiently and independently on 2nd shift after an initial training period on 1st shift.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC lathes, including performing complete machine setups in a timely and efficient manner.
- Perform your own tool changes, offsets, and proper tool touch-off to ensure accurate and consistent machining results.
- Make Mazatrol code edits directly on the controller and perform conversational programming edits as needed to optimize machining processes.
- Interpret blueprints and guide sheets to determine machining operations, dimensions, tolerances, and inspection requirements.
- Use standard measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, bore gauges, and gauge pins to verify part dimensions.
- Set up gauging and use basic inspection equipment to confirm parts meet print specifications and client requirements.
- Conduct basic inspections according to inspection sheets to ensure quality and adherence to tight tolerances.
- Apply basic math skills, including converting fractions to decimals and using a calculator, to support accurate measurements and setups.
- Provide feedback to leadership on opportunities to improve manufacturing processes, tooling, and setups.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety and quality procedures within the machine shop.
- Collaborate with team members and other departments as needed to support production goals and cross-training initiatives.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 4+ years of experience as a CNC setup technician or machinist working on lathes.
- Hands-on experience with CNC lathe setup, including performing complete setups, tool changes, and offsets independently.
- Ability to make Mazatrol code edits on the controller or perform conversational programming edits.
- Proficiency in blueprint reading and interpreting guide sheets to meet tight tolerances.
- Strong tool touch-off skills to ensure accurate tool lengths and offsets.
- Ability to use micrometers, calipers, depth micrometers, bore gauges, and other standard measuring devices for inspecting finished parts.
- Demonstrated ability to hold tight tolerances in a production or precision machining environment.
- Basic math skills, including converting fractions to decimals and using a calculator.
- Experience working with CNC lathes such as Mazak or similar (experience with other brands like Okuma is also considered).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background with CNC mills and lathes, particularly Mazak equipment with Integrix controllers.
- Prototype or production machining experience in a machine shop environment.
- Familiarity with G & M codes and general CNC machining practices.
- Experience working with tolerances, tooling, inspection processes, and machining in a climate-controlled facility.
- Comfort working with multiple departments and areas within a manufacturing facility.
- Willingness to cross-train in other departments and learn additional equipment or processes.
