Principal Subsea Systems Electrical Engineer
Woburn, MA
About the Team: The Sensors Division within STR focuses on developing and analyzing advanced sensor systems in RF, acoustic, and electro-optical domains, including ideation to prototype implementations. The Subsea and Seabed Systems (SSS) Group develops and delivers advanced undersea sensor and signal processing systems related to ISR and counter-ISR applications.
The Role:
Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of subsea and seabed systems? Do you thrive on solving complex challenges and leading the development of cutting-edge electrical designs? We are seeking a Lead Subsea Systems Electrical Engineer to spearhead the design, development, and implementation of advanced electrical systems for novel subsea and seabed systems, including UUVs, active and passive sonar, acoustic localization systems, echo-repeaters, acoustic modems, vehicle detection and tracking systems, acoustic countermeasures, and other underwater sensors.
In this role, you will drive the creation of UUV power and signal distribution systems, low-power sensor architectures, and multi-channel sonar amplification and signal conditioning chains. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, applying your expertise in electrical architecture development, schematic capture, printed circuit board (PCB) design, and electrical test and integration.
What you will do:
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of electrical systems for subsea and seabed systems, from concept to deployment
- Architect and implement power and signal distribution systems, low-power sensor systems, and sonar amplification and signal conditioning chains for subsea systems
- Design and implement electrical schematics and PCBs
- Collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems engineers to ensure seamless hardware/software integration
- Conduct simulation, testing, and validation of electrical systems in virtual and real-world environments, iterating designs to optimize performance
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of engineers
- Contribute to system-level requirements, architecture, and documentation to support full lifecycle development
- Evaluate and adopt cutting-edge tools, methods, and processes to enhance engineering outcomes
Who you are:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Applied Physics, or related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred)
- 10+ years (or a Master’s with 8+ years or a Ph.D. with 5+ years) of experience in electrical design of subsea and seabed systems, focusing on electrical architectures, power distribution, and/or signal conditioning
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS) clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is required
- Proven track record of taking white-sheet electrical designs from concept to full operational functionality, including mixed-signal designs with power distribution and high-fidelity analog signals
- Proficiency in electronic design automation tools such as Altium, Allegro, EAGLE, OrCAD, KiCad, or equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams on complex technical projects
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a creative and analytical mindset
- Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
Even Better:
- Active security clearance
- Experience with agile development methodologies and version control
- Experience with field testing, including at-sea deployments and recovery operations
- Knowledge of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and simulation environments
- Experience using modeling and simulation to set system performance expectations for advanced UUV designs
- Programming proficiency in C++, Python, or similar, with focus on embedded systems and real-time control
- Experience interacting with U.S. Navy and other Government organizations
