Plumbing & Fire Protection Project Designer
We are seeking a skilled Plumbing & Fire Protection Project Designer to join our MEP design team. The designer will develop plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects, producing coordinated construction documents and BIM models that meet codes and client requirements. The role requires strong Revit/BIM and AutoCAD skills, working knowledge of plumbing and fire protection systems, and the ability to collaborate with engineers, architects, and contractors to deliver high-quality design solutions on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed plumbing and fire protection system designs, calculations, and layout drawings for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects.
- Create, maintain, and deliver coordinated Revit (MEP) models and AutoCAD drawings, ensuring accuracy and compliance with contract documents.
- Produce construction documents, specifications, schedules, and material takeoffs for plumbing and fire protection systems.
- Perform BIM coordination and clash detection using Navisworks or similar tools; resolve coordination issues with design and trade teams.
- Apply applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA, IBC, local plumbing and fire codes) to ensure compliant system design.
- Collaborate with project engineers, architects, structural designers, and contractors to integrate MEP systems and incorporate design changes.
- Support engineering calculations and load analysis for plumbing and fire protection systems, including hydraulic calculations for sprinkler systems.
- Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and project coordination sessions to communicate design intent and respond to comments.
- Prepare detailed shop drawings and assist fabrication/installation teams with technical clarifications during construction.
- Conduct quality control reviews of drawings and models to ensure adherence to company standards and project requirements.
Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience designing plumbing and fire protection systems in a professional consulting, design, or engineering environment (or equivalent experience).
- Proficient in Revit (MEP) and BIM workflows; strong working knowledge of AutoCAD for drafting and documentation.
- Familiarity with fire protection systems (sprinkler design, standpipes, fire pumps) and plumbing systems (domestic water, sanitary, storm, stormwater management).
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NFPA (e.g., NFPA 13), IBC, and relevant local plumbing/fire codes.
- Experience with clash detection and coordination tools such as Navisworks, BIM 360, or similar platforms.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to coordinate across multi-disciplinary teams and interface with clients and contractors.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Preferred: NICET certification, PE or EIT, and experience producing shop drawings and construction administration support.
