Custom Machine LLC | 1st Shift | Full-Time

Position Summary

Manual Machinist – Lathe & Mill

Custom Machine LLC is seeking an experienced Manual Machinist to join our manufacturing team on 1st shift
. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience operating manual engine lathes, Bridgeport mills, and ProtoTRAK CNC lathes to produce precision‑machined components from engineering drawings and work instructions.

This position is well suited for a skilled machinist who takes pride in craftsmanship, understands precision machining, and can independently set up and operate manual and conversational CNC equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate manual engine lathes, Bridgeport vertical mills, and ProtoTRAK CNC lathes
    .
  • Machine close‑tolerance components from a variety of metals and materials.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, work instructions, and machining specifications
    .
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, drills, reamers, boring tools, and work holding.
  • Calculate and adjust speeds, feeds, depths of cut, and tooling parameters.
  • Perform manual turning, facing, boring, threading, grooving, drilling, and related lathe operations.
  • Perform milling, drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, slotting, and other operations on Bridgeport‑style mills.
  • Create and edit basic ProtoTRAK conversational programs and make necessary tool and dimensional offsets.
  • Inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, height gages, bore gages, and other precision measuring equipment
    .
  • Maintain required dimensional accuracy and surface‑finish requirements.
  • Perform in‑process and final inspection of machined components.
  • Identify tooling, machine, material, or process issues and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
  • Follow company quality procedures and manufacturing documentation.
  • Accurately document production, inspection results, and material usage.
  • Support continuous improvement activities and assist with troubleshooting machining issues.
  • Perform basic machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and routine adjustments.
Qualifications Required
  • Previous experience as a manual machinist or equivalent machining experience.
  • Demonstrated experience operating manual lathes and Bridgeport mills
    .
  • Experience with ProtoTRAK CNC lathes or similar conversational CNC controls.
  • Ability to independently set up and run machining operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of machining practices, cutting tools, feeds and speeds.
  • Proficiency using precision inspection equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple jobs and priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality parts.
Preferred
  • Experience machining aerospace, defense, medical, or other high‑precision components
    .
  • Familiarity with GD&T.
  • Experience working to tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Experience with CNC milling or CNC machining centers.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 or other quality management systems.
  • Trade school, machining certificate, or equivalent technical training.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while operating machinery.
  • Ability to regularly lift and move tooling, fixtures, raw material, and finished components.
  • Ability to safely handle metal stock and machining equipment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements and work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
Work Environment

This position is performed in a precision manufacturing environment with exposure to machine tools, metal chips, cutting fluids, coolants, oils, and industrial noise. Employees are expected to follow all safety, quality, and housekeeping requirements.

Schedule

1st Shift – Monday through Friday

7:00-3:30 plus overtime
