Project Engineer - Solar EPC

Company: Rethink Electric

Location: Wood Dale, IL (Project Sites as needed)

Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $90,000 - $115,000 commensurate with experience

About:

Rethink Electric is a commercial and industrial solar EPC and self-performing electrical contractor serving the greater Chicago area and surrounding markets. Rethink constructs rooftop, ground-mount, community solar, and other distributed-generation projects. Our project teams work together across engineering, procurement, project management, construction, commissioning, and operations to safely and efficiently deliver high-quality solar projects.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Project Engineer – Solar EPC to support the engineering and construction execution of commercial and industrial solar projects. This is a construction-side engineering position and is not an Engineer of Record, Owner’s Engineer, or independent design role. The Engineer will work with third-party engineering firms, Project Managers, Construction Managers, Foremen, Procurement, and field teams to ensure engineering documents are coordinated, constructible, accurate, and ready for construction.

The Project Engineer will review third-party engineering packages, participate in design reviews and page turns, identify constructability issues, prepare drawing redlines, coordinate revisions, perform material takeoffs, support RFIs and submittals, and provide technical support to active construction projects. The successful candidate will understand how engineering documents translate into field installation and will be comfortable working between the engineering office and construction site.

Responsibilities:

  • Review third-party electrical, structural, civil, architectural, and PV engineering drawings and specifications for completeness, coordination, constructability, and consistency with the project scope.
  • Participate in engineering page turns, design reviews, drawing review meetings, and coordination calls with third-party engineers and Rethink project and field leadership.
  • Review IFP, IFC, permit, and revised drawing packages and identify discrepancies, omissions, conflicts, and conditions that could affect construction.
  • Redline drawings and document required corrections, field conditions, design conflicts, and proposed revisions for review by the applicable third-party engineer.
  • Track engineering comments, drawing revisions, responses, and drawing status to ensure the construction team is working from the current approved documents.
  • Support the preparation and coordination of RFIs related to design conflicts, field conditions, equipment, installation requirements, and drawing clarifications.
  • Perform material takeoffs from approved engineering documents, including conductor lengths, conduit quantities and lengths, equipment quantities, racking components, wire management, grounding materials, and other construction materials.
  • Support Procurement and Project Management with quantities, equipment requirements, material specifications, and technical information required for purchasing.
  • Review equipment submittals, manufacturer information, installation requirements, and shop drawings for alignment with approved project documents and construction requirements.
  • Coordinate with field teams to investigate drawing discrepancies, existing conditions, installation questions, and constructability issues and communicate findings to the appropriate engineering resource.
  • Visit active project sites as required to verify existing conditions, support field troubleshooting, confirm installation requirements, and document as-built conditions.
  • Review field redlines and support accurate as-built documentation and project closeout packages.
  • Support value-engineering and construction optimization efforts by identifying practical alternatives that maintain design intent, code compliance, quality, safety, schedule, and project requirements.
  • Maintain organized engineering records and ensure project teams have access to current drawings, revisions, RFIs, and technical documentation.
  • Provide technical support to Project Managers, Construction Managers, Foremen, and field crews throughout construction, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail, accountability, organization, and the ability to manage multiple projects and engineering packages simultaneously.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in commercial/industrial solar, electrical construction, EPC, construction engineering, or a related technical field; solar EPC experience strongly preferred.
  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred; equivalent construction experience will be considered.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret electrical, structural, civil, architectural, and PV construction drawings and specifications.
  • Practical understanding of commercial and industrial rooftop and ground-mount solar…
