Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Full‑Time Staff Nurse for the Adult Diagnostic Treatment Center STU, located in Avenel, NJ. The UCHC Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health‑care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. The role works with a variety of health‑care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment, frequently follows nursing protocols, and serves as a team leader when assigned.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmates (ages 18–64) and geriatrics (65+) and their families within the framework established by the correctional system.
  • Utilizes effective communication skills, demonstrating respect, concern, and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
  • Attends appropriate in‑services and continuing education offerings to acquire and maintain necessary skills.
  • Participates in offering education to inmates, security officers, and other members of the health‑care team.
  • Participates in in‑service meetings and educational programs, either as attendee or teacher, as approved by supervisor.
Salary Details

Grade 01D

Minimum Salary: $37,230

Mid‑Range Salary: $46,540

Maximum Salary: $54,050

Position Status

Full Time (20 hours per week)

Standard hours are 40 hours per week. Daily work shift is evening. The position requires a full onsite work arrangement.

Qualifications

Minimum

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey
Certifications / Licenses
  • CPR Certification
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey
  • Valid driver’s license; must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a correctional setting preferred
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Must be able to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes, lift and carry an emergency treatment bag up to 45 pounds, and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
