Staff Nurse - RN

Evening Shifts Available

The Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care to adult and geriatric patients within a correctional facility in Avenel, NJ, using the nursing process and established clinical protocols. This role assesses patient health needs, develops patient-centered goals, implements prescribed interventions, and collaborates with healthcare professionals and correctional staff to support safe, effective care. The Staff Nurse may function as a team leader and must communicate professionally while maintaining patient dignity, safety, and security requirements.

The position requires the ability to work effectively in a structured, potentially stressful correctional environment while maintaining professional competency and required credentials.

• Assess and identify the physical, psychosocial, and emotional healthcare needs of adult and geriatric patients.

• Develop patient-centered goals and nursing objectives based on identified healthcare needs.

• Implement prescribed nursing interventions and evaluate patient responses to care.

• Provide direct and indirect nursing care in accordance with established correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and nursing protocols.

• Collaborate with healthcare professionals, correctional officers, and other facility staff to coordinate patient care.

• Function as a team leader when assigned and contribute to the professional development of coworkers.

• Communicate with patients and staff using professionalism, respect, concern, and courtesy.

• Promote and maintain a safe environment for the delivery of healthcare services.

• Maintain professional nursing skills through continuing education and ongoing professional development.

• Maintain required nursing licensure, certifications, and credentials.

• Follow applicable personnel policies, security procedures, and facility regulations.

• Respond appropriately to emergency situations within the correctional healthcare environment.

• Minimum of one year of correctional nursing experience preferred.

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.

• Active license to practice nursing in the State of New Jersey.

• Current CPR certification required.

• Valid driver's license required.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

• Ability to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes when responding to an emergency.

• Ability to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds, including carrying it upstairs when necessary.

• Ability to assist with lifting, repositioning, and rotating non‑ambulatory patients, including lifting up to 50 pounds.

• Ability to work effectively in a stressful and highly structured correctional environment.

• Ability to interact professionally with patients, correctional staff, and members of the healthcare team.

• Ability to comply with facility security regulations, procedures, and access requirements.

• Must have a personal vehicle or reliable alternative transportation for travel between sites when required.

• Entry into and movement throughout the correctional facility are controlled by Correctional Officers.

• Must comply with all applicable facility security regulations and procedures.

• May be exposed to infectious or contagious diseases while performing job duties.
