Job Summary

This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades K-5. The teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, modifies instructional activities as required, and performs related duties as assigned. The role may involve single, team, or departmental teaching settings, including possibility of reading or technology lab assignments, under general supervision of the principal or designated administrator.

Responsibilities
  • Implements an instructional program that provides appropriate learning for each student by differentiating instruction.
  • Plans and delivers instruction in adherence to the Prince William County Curriculum documents regarding specific teaching assignments.
  • Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Plans appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate principles of learning, classroom organizational structures, and kinds and levels of materials.
  • Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure a conducive learning environment; assists in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, school grounds, and during lunch (excluding duty‑free lunch situations); no student should be left alone.
  • Cooperates with and participates in the planning and evaluation of the school program.
  • Requests assistance of resource personnel as needed and works cooperatively to ensure an appropriate learning environment for all students.
  • Participates in the professional development program of the school and School Division.
  • Co‑ordinates instructional activities and collaborates with other professional staff both at school and externally to maximise learning opportunities.
  • Follows the ethics of the profession.
  • Supports parent/teacher or parent/student organisations and promotes parent/teacher partnerships.
  • Enforces policies and regulations established by the Prince William County School Board and staff in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Supervises pupil activities in buildings and on grounds during and after school hours, ensuring conduct and safety of students in the classroom and on school grounds; no group of students should be left unattended.
  • Demonstrates prompt and accurate written communications and reports.
  • Adheres to county and school disciplinary procedures.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviours:

  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of the assigned grade level(s) or instructional speciality(ies).
  • Knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Knowledge of Prince William County Public Schools curricula, programme of studies, public school mission, goals and organisation.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programmes.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons using the Standards‑Based Instructional Planning Process based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to utilise multi‑media and computer technology, as appropriate.
  • Skills in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.
  • If teaching music, ability to demonstrate singing, choral techniques, movement, technique on pitched and unpitched instruments and proficiency on the piano; ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality.
  • If teaching visual art, a personal portfolio demonstrating artistic ability and experience in a variety of media.
Education and Certification
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Certification:
    Collegiate Professional, Post Graduate Professional, or appropriate vocational licence issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignment(s); must be eligible for Virginia Teacher Certification Programme or licence.
  • Other:
    If assigned off‑site tasks or serving as itinerant, possession of a valid automobile operator’s licence to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required.
Work Environment

The work environment is primarily indoor (classroom, office). Employees may be exposed to minor inconveniences such as occasional noise, exposure to computer screens, crowded working conditions, and minor heating, cooling or ventilation problems.
