Job Summary

This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students. It manages student behavior, assesses student achievement, modifies instructional activities as needed, and carries out monitoring and control activities. The teacher serves as a general‑education classroom teacher, teaching single or multi‑grade level subjects or specialty courses. Duties are typically performed in a team or departmental setting, but the teacher may work independently in a specialty area or be assigned to science laboratories or industrial arts/technology labs where higher monitoring is required.

Responsibilities
  • Work in person and report for work on site.
  • Assess student achievement continuously and maintain documentation for reporting purposes.
  • Plan and implement instructional and learning strategies, select appropriate materials, manage instructional time, and use multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Manage student behavior and assist in classroom management across all school campuses.
  • Coordinate instructional activities with other staff to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Work in a self‑contained, departmental, itinerant, or field capacity, including off‑school site visits for monitoring students and coordinating with employers or field instructors.
  • Participate in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings as required.
  • Foster partnerships and maintain continuous communication with parents, both written and oral.
  • Communicate with students about instructional expectations and progress.
  • Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers.
  • Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis as an itinerant educator.
  • Support or participate in school wide activities and social events.
  • Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervene to modify disruptive behavior, reporting to appropriate administrators.
  • Collaborate with other professionals such as guidance counselors and librarians to carry out school wide instructional or related activities as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications for Successful Performance
  • Knowledge of the Instructional Process
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment for assigned instructional specialties.
  • Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development
  • Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum related to assignments and school division mission, goals, and organization.
  • Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and student needs.
  • Skill in oral and written communication
    ; excellent human relations skills.
  • Foreign‑language teachers must be proficient in oral and written communication in that language.
