This position develops and implements effective instructional practices based on the needs identified in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). It develops, implements, and monitors the students' IEPs in collaboration with parents and other IEP team members, promoting a collaborative relationship with school staff and parents to foster inclusionary practices.

• Assumes the responsibilities of a special education teacher, including those listed in the Prince William County Public Schools Regulation 561.01-1, Certificated Personnel Responsibilities and Duties.
• Develops IEPs, plans curriculum, develops individualized lesson plans, and prepares instructional materials that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students.
• Manages students with disabilities, serves and instructs them across the continuum in all areas specified by the IEP.
• Utilizes models for teaching and support across the continuum – consult, push‑in, pull‑out, small group, and co‑teaching – as per student IEPs.
• Participates in school‑based Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to plan specially designed instruction and accommodations, ensuring students access grade‑level general education standards and provide Tier 2/3 interventions as needed.
• Leverages and coordinates available resources to support the specially designed instruction and accommodations required by students with disabilities.
• Ensures IEP data collection and quarterly reporting to families on each child’s progress toward IEP goals.
• Develops and implements a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques (hands‑on, group work, lecture, etc.) to present instructional content.
• Plans, integrates, and utilizes technology for classroom instruction.
• Uses assistive technology and specialized equipment.
• Works with students to increase motivation, provides consistent reinforcement, continuous assessment of functioning, and continuous feedback.
• Develops and implements a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with IEP using positive behavioral supports.
• Participates in the development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process.
• Administers, interprets, and reports standardized test results for evaluating educational progress and determining eligibility for special education.
• Participates in staff, department, and special education committee meetings as required.
• Maintains a system of record keeping and data collection following required procedures in the Special Education Manual.
• Compiles and maintains the special education component of the Student Education Record.
• Completes the Prince William County Public Schools 30‑hour staff development requirement.
• Participates in specialized staff development activities to improve job‑related skills and apply best practices in working with students with disabilities.
• Provides services and/or teaches courses in general education and special education settings as dictated by student IEPs (e.g., core content areas, teaching strategies, life skills).
• When providing services through co‑teaching models, collaborates with the general education classroom teacher to assess program effectiveness, recommend instructional strategies, ensure implementation of accommodations, coordinate curriculum, and evaluate educational progress.
• Consults with general education teachers regarding instructional and behavioral strategies for assigned students.
• Informs general education teachers of accommodations and modifications required by students' IEPs.
• Plans and supervises assignments for teacher assistants and/or other volunteers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
