Job Summary
:
This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades K-5. The teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required. The teacher carries out a variety of student monitoring and control activities and serves as a general education elementary classroom teacher (K-5). Classes taught may be single, team, or departmental, and a teacher may work independently in a unique teaching specialty.

The position may be assigned to reading or technology labs. The teacher performs work under the general supervision of a principal or other designated administrator.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Implement an instructional program that provides appropriate learning for each student by differentiating instruction.
  • Plan and deliver instruction in adherence to the Prince William County Curriculum documents regarding specific teaching assignments.
  • Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Plan appropriate instructional and learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate principles of learning, classroom organizational structures, and appropriate materials.
  • Manage the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure a conducive learning environment and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school, school grounds, and during lunch.
  • Cooperate with and participate in the planning and evaluation of the school program.
  • Request assistance from resource personnel as needed and work cooperatively to ensure an appropriate learning environment for all students.
  • Participate in the professional development program of the schools and School Division.
  • Coordinate instructional activities and collaborate with other professional staff both school and non-school-based to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Follow the ethics of the profession.
  • Support actively a parent/teacher or parent/student organization and promote parent/teacher partnerships.
  • Enforce policies and regulations as established by the Prince William County School Board and staff in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Supervise pupil activities in buildings and on grounds during and after school hours and be responsible for the conduct and safety of students in the classroom and on school grounds.
  • Demonstrate prompt and accurate written communications and reports.
  • Adhere to county and school disciplinary procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum education:

    Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Certification:
    State collegiate professional, post-graduate professional, or appropriate vocational license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia; must be eligible for the Virginia Teacher Certification Program or licensure.
  • For off-site tasks or itinerant responsibilities, possession of a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required.
  • Knowledge of the instructional process, content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of assigned instructional specialties.
  • Knowledge of pre-adolescent and adolescent growth and development.
  • Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum related to assignments and School Division mission, goals, and organization.
  • Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students.
  • Skill in oral and written communication and excellent human relations skills.
