Position: AUTISM - TEACHER OF STUDENTS W/ AUTISM - 195 DAY

Position Summary

AUTISM – Teacher of Students with Autism – 195 Day, Full Time.

Location:

Woodbridge, VA. This position works in classroom setting with students who have autism, implementing Individualized Education Programs and ensuring inclusionary practices.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assumes the responsibilities of a special education teacher, including teacher duties listed in Prince William County Public Schools Regulation 561.01-1, Certified Personnel Responsibilities and Duties.
  • Develops IEPs, plans curriculum, creates individualized lesson plans, and develops instructional materials that reflect learning styles and needs of assigned students.
  • Instructs students in all areas specified by the IEP.
  • Develops and implements a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques (e.g., hands‑on, student interaction, lecture, group work) to present instructional content to students.
  • Plans, integrates, and utilizes technology for classroom instruction; utilizes assistive technology and specialized equipment.
  • Works with students to increase motivation, provides consistent reinforcement, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback on all learning activities.
  • Develops and implements a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with IEP, using a variety of positive behavioral supports.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process.
  • Administers, interprets, and reports standardized test results for evaluating educational progress and determining eligibility for special education.
  • Participates in staff, department, and special education committee meetings as required.
  • Maintains a system of record keeping and data collection following required procedures outlined in the Special Education Manual.
  • Compiles and maintains the special education component of the Student Education Record as outlined in the Special Education Manual.
  • Completes the county’s 30‑hour staff development requirement and participates in specialized staff‑development activities.
  • Collaborates in a co‑teaching situation with the general education classroom teacher to assess program effectiveness, recommend instructional strategies, and coordinate curriculum.
  • Consults with the general education teacher regarding instructional and behavioral strategies for assigned students in general education classes.
  • Informs general education teachers of accommodations and modifications required by the students’ IEPs.
  • Plans and supervises assignments for teacher assistants or other volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for Successful Performance
  • Knowledge of and adherence to federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing education of students with disabilities.
  • Minimum educational requirement:
    Bachelor’s Degree. Preferred:
    Master’s Degree.
  • Experience:

    equivalent to at least Type Area or Field (specific not stated).
  • Certification:
    Virginia teaching certificate with endorsements in the area of disability served; conditional license may be granted if working toward complete endorsement at a minimum of six semester hours per year.
  • Possible work environment: indoor/outdoor with exposure to environmental conditions such as unpleasant weather, building conditions, uneven terrain.
