Overview
The Prince William County Violent Crimes Bureau is looking for an energetic, self-starter, with excellent communication skills, to assist Detectives as a professional staff death investigator. Under general supervision, you will investigate sudden, unexpected or unnatural deaths unattended by a physician. You will be required to collect evidence pertinent to the death investigation, as well as determine if the death was natural, accidental, a suicide, or criminal in nature.

This position will require the incumbent to assist detectives in multiple ways, including but not limited to:
- Physically respond to death scenes to determine if the death is natural, accidental, a suicide, or criminal in nature.
- These scenes will include fentanyl overdose deaths, suicides by weapon or other means, and accidental deaths such as drowning or electrocution.
- Work in conjunction with Violent Crimes Detectives, Medical Examiners' Office, and area hospitals.
- Gather facts regarding death from Patrol Officers and determine if a response is needed.
- Inspect the body and the scene of the death, to determine if it is natural, accidental, suicide, or a homicide.
- Obtain pertinent information from witnesses and family members.
- Confirm identity of the decedent.
- Collect and preserve any associated evidence.
- Makes Next of Kin death notifications.
Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of related experience as law enforcement investigations, emergency medical services, medical examiners death investigations or any combination of above three.
Preferences- Five or more years of public safety experience or Federal Law Enforcement
- Three or more years of death investigations
- Medicolegal Death Investigations Certifications
- A valid driver's license
- All applicants considered for hire by the Prince William County Police Department are subject to a Polygraph Examination and a thorough Background Investigation.
Monday – Friday, 8am-4pm (this is flexible)
Starting Salary Range$88,974.60 –
