Prince William County Planning Office is seeking a Senior Development Services Technician who is a highly motivated team player with great customer service, excellent judgment, and an innovative mindset to tackle planning challenges. This is a position in the Land Use Review Division, which reviews and provides case management services for rezoning and special use permit applications from initial submission to preparing reports that include staff recommendations for presentation to the Planning Commission through final action by the Board of County Supervisors regarding the application.
AboutThis Role
The Senior Development Services Technician works under general supervision and exercises a high level of discretion and independent judgment in performing responsibilities spanning the entire spectrum of the planning function, with primary responsibility for the formulation, design, conduct, and completion of specialized County planning projects or services. The selected individual will perform a variety of other duties within the Land Use Review Division, including managing case/project files, meeting deadlines, tracking milestones, and administratively handling complex processes.
This position requires the ability to read plans and applications for quality control purposes. General knowledge of zoning and long‑range planning practices and principles would be preferred. You will work as a member of a 13‑person Land Use Review team under the supervision of the Land Use Review manager.
Routine tasks in this role include:
- Assist customers and applicants on how to prepare rezoning, special use permits, and other applications in the Planning Office.
- Prepare cases for Prince William County Board of Supervisors public hearings.
- Process applications, including quality control review and distribution/routing of packets and staff reports.
- Accept and process payments, review fees, and update account and payment data in the information system.
- Comply with time‑sensitive deadlines.
- Manage case load & provide support to planners.
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years of related experience.
The equivalent combination of education and related work experience (including internships) may be considered.
Preferences- At least 1 year of direct experience as Development Services Technician in a Planning related field.
- Outstanding customer service skills in dealing with the public, co‑workers, applicants, and other county agencies.
- Excellent organization and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with plan drawings and surveys.
- Ability to receive funds and post funds.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Possess strong organizational skills sufficient to maintain multiple electronic and paper case files simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Skill with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly maintaining tasks and calendars in Outlook, and the ability to format reports in Word.
- Familiarity with County mapper and Ener Gov.

Starting Salary Range$33.00 - $36.00 per hour
