Data Analyst, Data Science Manager
Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue (PWCFR) is seeking a Data Analyst (Temporary) to join its Communications & IT (CIT) team. This position supports data-driven decision-making across one of the region’s largest and most operationally complex public safety agencies.
The Data Analyst plays a critical role in transforming operational, incident, and performance data into actionable insights that inform leadership, improve service delivery, and enhance community safety. This role directly supports Fire & Rescue operations, staffing analysis, performance measurement, and regulatory reporting.
About This RoleThe Data Analyst provides analytical and reporting support through the extraction, validation, and analysis of data from multiple Fire & Rescue systems. Primary responsibilities include developing dashboards, producing recurring and ad-hoc reports, and supporting leadership and operational stakeholders with accurate, well-structured data.
This role works extensively with data from Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), Records Management Systems (RMS), EMS platforms, and staffing systems, translating raw data into meaningful metrics and visualizations using business intelligence tools such as Power BI.
Key responsibilities- Extracting and analyzing datasets using SQL and related tools
- Developing and maintaining dashboards and reports for leadership and operational use
- Ensuring data quality through validation, cleansing, and reconciliation
- Identifying trends, workload patterns, and service demand indicators
- Supporting forecasting, performance analysis, and operational planning
- Assisting with accreditation, compliance, and regulatory reporting efforts
- Developing and maintaining data dictionaries, metadata, and documentation
- Communicating findings through clear visualizations, reports, and presentations tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborating with IT staff, analysts, and operational stakeholders to define metrics and improve data maturity
- High School diploma or G.E.D. and 5 years of experience independently analyzing large, complex datasets from multiple sources (CAD, RMS, EMS, or Staffing Systems).
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
- Proficiency with data analysis and visualization tools such as Excel and Power BI (or equivalent platforms)
- Experience querying relational databases using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) or similar database management tools
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience working with public safety or emergency services data
- Familiarity with HIPAA, NFPA standards, and accreditation and compliance report efforts
- Entry-level experience with GIS tools (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS)
Background checks, which may include but are not limited to Criminal History Check, Credit History Check, Education Verification Check, License Verification Check, and/or fingerprinting may be required as posted in the job advertisement.
Fire & Rescue Requirement:
Effective October 2012, mandated by the Virginia State Board of Health 12
VAC5-31-540, VA EMS Regulations require a criminal background check conducted by the Central Crime Records Exchange and the National Crime Information Center via Virginia State Police; and a driving record transcript from the individual’s state Department of Motor Vehicles.
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, 30 hours per week – Exact Hours within may vary
Starting Salary Range$36.37-$50.24 per hour
