Shumaker & Sieffert is on the lookout for skilled patent agents and technical specialists passionate about innovation and collaboration. Patent Agents have the opportunity to work with a variety of exciting new technologies and get to use their technical backgrounds in a unique way to help our clients protect their innovations. Patent Agents work closely with our attorneys to learn about the new technologies directly from the inventors and then prepare patent applications for those technologies.

Patent Agents also prepare, for filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, both technical and legal arguments related to those patent applications.

• 1-3 years of patent prosecution or related intellectual property experience or 1-3 years of engineering or computer programming experience in a relevant technical field.
• A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or a related technical field.
• Strong technical writing and analytical skills
• Candidates must be eligible to sit for the USPTO Patent Bar Exam. USPTO registration is not required at the time of hire; however, candidates will be expected to take the USPTO Patent Bar Exam within their first year of employment. Candidates who already have their USPTO registration will be given the title Patent Agent. Candidates without a USPTO registration will be given the title Technical Specialist until they pass the USPTO Patent Bar Exam.
• This role requires access to systems and information subject to U.S. export control laws, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). To be considered, applicants must be legally authorized to access ITAR-controlled data under applicable federal requirements (e.g., U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or protected individuals under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)).

Salary ranges from $95,000 to $115,000.

Profit sharing and generous benefits package included.

The salary range listed in each job posting represents the minimum and maximum targets for new hire salaries across all locations. Actual compensation within this range is determined by various factors, such as experience, billing rate, and production.
