Position SummaryThe primary goal of the Health Care Specialist is to provide timely care for student health, injuries, and illnesses, including support for medically fragile or cognitively impaired students and performing technical nursing procedures under the direction of a Licensed School Nurse.
Primary Job Functions- First Aid: administer first aid, emergency, and episodic care within licensure; monitor students and refer to the Licensed School Nurse when necessary.
- Cooperation:
- Assist the Licensed School Nurse in planning services for students with special needs.
- Assist with Special Education evaluations.
- Develop Individual Health Plans under LSN supervision.
- Act as a Health Services team member to support student health and facilitate learning; attend IEP meetings as Health Services/TAT/SST representative.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain health records, emergency cards, pupil health records, physicals, and medical documentation.
- Maintain data logs and compile a year‑end report (May).
- Accurately document duties and preserve confidential health files accessible only to staff with a need to know.
- Maintain third‑party billing documentation.
- Student Wellness:
- Assist with vision, hearing, and early childhood screenings under LSN supervision.
- Comply with communicable disease procedures; collect immunization data per state mandates.
- Delegated Functions:
- Administer medications and perform technical nursing procedures (e.g., G‑tube, respiratory suctioning, complex wound dressing, catheterization, port care) under LSN direction and school policy.
- Support technical health needs of students as directed by LSN.
- Other Duties:
- Assigned by Building Principal or Special Education Director, supervising LSN or Lead Nurses.
- Provide health care training to staff.
- Participate in local time studies.
- Current licensing by the Minnesota Board of Nursing as an LPN or RN.
- Positive interaction with people of all ages.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Ability to work within the scope and practice of the position.
- Proficiency with Windows-based computer software.
- Prompt, reliable attendance.
- Excellent communication skills with students, parents, co‑workers, supervisors, and community.
- Demonstrated appreciation for diversity in all interactions.
- No written reprimand or higher within the past 12 months.
- Not on a Performance Improvement Plan.
- Must participate in a standardized interview process conducted by HR and the Department/Building Administration; score ≥ 70% required to pass.
- Knowledge and experience working with children with special health needs or in special education.
