Job Description

Woodland Community College is seeking an equity‑minded, dynamic, collaborative, and innovative instructor to serve as the political science instructor. One of two colleges in the Yuba Community College District, Woodland Community College is located in Woodland, CA, an excellent choice for quality of life with close proximity to the Sierra Nevada for outdoor recreation, a burgeoning farm‑to‑fork movement, and access to the metropolitan areas of Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The College is excited about its status as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and serves local communities in Woodland, Esparto, and Knights Landing in Yolo County, Lake County, and Colusa County. The College serves over 3,000 unduplicated students annually in multiple associate and certificated programs. WCC prides itself on an innovative, student‑centered faculty and partnerships with school districts and four‑year colleges in its service area.

The small college setting provides an advantage for faculty and staff to adapt to new instructional methods and processes and to foster strong interdisciplinary collaborations that benefit students.

Woodland Community College seeks a strong, well‑rounded, equity‑minded political science educator. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience or potential to be an excellent instructor at a community college and can provide leadership or contribute positively in areas such as the development of the political science program and curriculum, keeping course offerings up‑to‑date and relevant, staying abreast of and communicating current trends in political science education, and collaborating with area high schools.

The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds through effective communication and collaboration. As a full‑time faculty member, this individual will be expected to organize and teach political science courses, including but not limited to American government and politics; comparative government/politics; introduction to political theory; and international relations.

The successful candidate will be expected to organize and teach a diverse curriculum and engage in culturally responsive and accessible pedagogy. They will provide instruction in accordance with course descriptions, outlines, class schedules, and Governing Board policies; evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters; develop and assess student learning outcomes; and perform other instructional‑related duties as assigned. As part of a community of educators, the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to participating in professional development opportunities that build effectiveness in areas of inclusion, intercultural communication, and advancing equity and diversity.

Evening, weekend, distance education, and off‑campus instruction may be part of the contract. The college offers courses in in‑person, online, hybrid, and point‑to‑point interactive modalities. The successful candidate will be able to utilize instructional technologies effectively for inclusion and accessibility.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge of and ability to understand the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Sensitivity to the needs, problems, and challenges associated with the diversity of the community college student population.

By the final filing date, the successful candidate must possess the minimum qualifications for instructors in Political Science at California Community Colleges:

  • Master’s in political science, government, or international relations
  • OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in economics, history, public administration, social science, sociology, ethnic studies, Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B.)
