Position: Lifeguard / Instructor (20703478) (Temporary/Part-Time)

The City of Woodland is strategically located in California’s Sacramento Valley, one of the world’s richest agricultural areas. The City has a population of over 60,000 while maintaining it small town appeal, and is the County seat of Yolo County. Woodland is approximately 85 miles northeast of San Francisco and 24 miles northwest of Sacramento, the State Capitol. The City is ideally positioned along Interstate 5 and is also serviced by the Sacramento International Airport, 12 miles to the east.

Known as the “City of Trees”, Woodland has 176 acres of parks with a wide variety of athletic fields, which host a myriad of year-round sports activities for youth and adults. The surrounding area offers water skiing and boating on Sacramento River, Lake Berryessa, and Folsom Lake. Winters can be enjoyed skiing at the many fine resorts in the Lake Tahoe area.

Woodland is a full-service City and includes the departments of Public Works, Community Development, Finance, Human Resources, Police, Fire, Community Services, Public Library and the City Manager’s and City Clerk’s Office. In order to maintain a high level of service to our diverse community, the City of Woodland is looking for motivated and qualified applicants to join our current staff of 323 employees, 165 classifications City wide.

Under general supervision, the Lifeguard provides a safe environment for all aquatic programs. The Lifeguard prevents loss of life or injury to patrons and regularly performs related maintenance duties. Some evening and weekend hours are required. Mandatory pre-season in-service training sessions will be held in June.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Enforces pool rules and regulations; rescues individuals in distress and provides First Aid/CPR as needed; maintains pool records and reports, including program registrations and safety reports; adheres to City policies and procedures; and performs other assigned duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Age Requirement:

  • At least 15 years of age.

Experience:

  • No prior experience is required.
  • Recommended experience includes exposure to swimming lesson instruction, working with youth in an organized environment, participation in the Junior Lifeguard program, or experience as an Instructor's Aide or Lifeguard.

Knowledge of:

  • Familiarity with lifeguard rescue and life‑saving techniques.
  • The American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program and basic pool policies and procedures, or equivalent.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate all lifeguard training skills effectively.
  • Swim proficiently and showcase various swimming techniques.
  • Communicate clearly in both oral and written forms.
  • Collaborate well with colleagues and others encountered during work.

Certifications:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with CPR and First Aid (or equivalent)
  • Ability to obtain training in First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22 equivalent)
SALARY SCHEDULE

$19.00 – $20.00 per hour based on experience and years of service.

This recruitment is Open Until Filled with first review of applications scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at 4pm.

LIMITED POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Applications must be submitted online or to the Woodland Community & Senior Center at 2001 East Street.

All of these positions are temporary part‑time.
Temporary employees work no more than 130 per month AND 960 hours in a Fiscal Year.

The pay cycle is bi‑weekly. No other benefits compensations are provided except for worker's compensation coverage and sick leave. Employees must contribute 1.45% of their salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan under Federal Law.

THE ABILITY TO SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND SPANISH IS A DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION FOR ALL POSITIONS.
