READY TO KEEP HEALTHCARE FACILITIES SAFE FOR MILLIONS? Join the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality as a Safety Engineer evaluating healthcare facilities for fire and life safety compliance. At CMS, you'll conduct on-site inspections, apply safety engineering expertise, and ensure the facilities serving Medicare beneficiaries meet federal safety standards—protecting patients, staff, and communities nationwide. Your expertise could keep patients safe where they receive care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide authoritative technical expertise in safety engineering, reviewing fire and related life safety issues in healthcare facilities
  • Conduct on-site life safety and emergency preparedness inspections and surveys of Medicare providers and suppliers
  • Recommend termination of healthcare providers from CMS programs when safety practices don’t meet federal standards, and develop termination documentation
  • Apply extensive safety engineering theory and principles to obtain compliance with federal regulations
  • Advise the SOG director and CMS managers on LSC interpretation, including recommendations on waiver requests
Qualifications
  • Engineering degree (ABET-accredited or qualifying coursework), OR qualifying combination of education and experience with PE/EIT registration or FE exam
  • Experience conducting fire and life safety inspections of healthcare facilities (Life Safety Code, Health Care Facilities Code, or equivalent)
  • Background applying safety engineering principles to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions
  • Experience providing technical guidance on fire/life safety standards, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance

Pay range and compensation package

Salary: $90,925 - $118,204/year base (varies by location; see locality rates)
