Position: Library Assistant (Part-Time)

Library Assistant

The Library Assistant performs support activities involved in operating a public library, such as shelf maintenance, patron assistance, and circulation duties.

Essential Functions
  • Receive oral or written instructions from the library director
  • Create and sustain a welcoming, safe, and comfortable library environment for all library customers
  • Maintain a fully operational front desk from open to close, which involves equipping the copier/printer, starting all required computer programs, and diligently managing materials from both the main and westside book depositories
    • Perform services for library customers at the front desk, such as checking in and out of library materials, receiving and processing reserves, registering customers, collecting fines and fees, working with the library’s computer/print management system
    • Aid users in navigating and accessing library materials, services, and facilities
    • Guide customers in effectively using library computer systems, software applications, printing services, and internet resources
    • Help users navigate library resources on electronic devices and equipment
    • Answer informational, directional, and reader’s advisory questions from library customers of all ages, in person or by phone
  • Sort and shelve library materials in alphabetical and numerical order, according to the library’s classification system
  • Maintain accuracy of library materials on shelves
  • Assist with the process of library materials being added and withdrawn from the collection
  • Assist with library programs (summer reading program, discussion groups) and displays
  • Comply with all library policies
  • Perform facility opening and closing procedures
Qualifications
  • Must be 16 years of age or have a high school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read, understand, and communicate fluently in the English language
  • Experience with office equipment, computers, and other technological equipment and devices
  • Responsive to the needs of library customers
  • Neat, clean appearance and professionally dressed
  • Exhibits dependability, trustworthiness, and honesty
  • Available to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license, a driving record acceptable to City of Woodward’s insurance carrier, and a commercial driver’s license as necessary
  • Must be able to pass a background and drug/alcohol screening
  • Willingness to attend professional development classes and activities
