Job Description

TITLE: Certified Special Education Teacher

SUPERVISED BY: Building Principal / Special Education Director

SUPERVISES: Students, teacher aides, para-professionals and volunteers as assigned

JOB GOAL: To help students demonstrate success as it relates to defined curriculum outcomes, and to help students cope with their changes from childhood through adulthood and with the academic skills and knowledge essential for good citizenship and life‑long learning. To provide classroom instruction consistent with the course of study as specified by the State of Oklahoma, Board of Education and appropriate curriculum development committees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • As set by the State of Oklahoma and the Board of Education
  • Qualify for Oklahoma certification in the appropriate area of study
  • Such alternatives as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Student Leaning:

  • Set high expectations for learning for all students based on their individual needs.
  • Create a safe and orderly environment, which facilitates positive behavior and learning for all students.
  • Demonstrate positive interaction skills with students.
  • Use a variety of instructional materials; activities and approaches appropriate to meet the needs of individual learners.
  • Monitor the progress of individual students and student groups through the use of appropriate assessment techniques, including uses of technology and student self assessment.
  • Recognize the signs of distress in students (academic/emotional/physical) and take appropriate action.
  • Develop and monitor plans of improvement for students who are academically deficient.
  • Work to improve the educational opportunities of students in need of such services.
  • Encourage and develop activities, which promote student creative expression, thinking, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Motivate and develop student initiative, ideas and viewpoints.
  • Integrate subject matter into the objectives and mission of the school.
  • Relate the subject matter to current situations and potential careers, creating for the students a sense of relevancy to the learning‑taking place.
  • Design learning activities that are sensitive to the diversity of the students served.
  • Seek and encourage positive peer relations among all students.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate confidence and conviction in the educational professional and public education.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and enthusiasm for work.
  • Promote friendly intra‑school relationships, respect opinions of others and cooperate with the total operation of the school.
  • Respond constructively to frustrations and unpleasant situations.
  • Demonstrate self‑control and sound judgment.
  • Respond positively to constructive criticism.
  • Provide a good example for students through appearance, language and general conduct.
  • Use the English language clearly and accurately.
  • Work and communicate with school personnel.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and/or legal guardians of students.
  • Respect confidential information using it only in a professional manner.
  • Continually strive to improve professionally.

Specific duties, procedures and responsibilities will be developed within individual buildings by Principals and/or the Superintendent in accordance with the provisions of the Board of Education, all applicable statutes and regulations and the negotiated agreement.
