POSITION SUMMARY: Mechanic I/Mechanic II positions perform preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on City vehicles. This position requires some degree of independent action and judgment and is under the direct supervision of the Fleet Management Superintendent. Placement on the pay scale is dependent upon experience as follows:
Mechanic – 0-5 years’ experience, Mechanic I – 5-10 years’ experience, Mechanic II – over 10 years’ experience.

• Inspects, diagnoses, and locates complex mechanical problems in automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered construction equipment (such as tractors, graders, bulldozer, etc.).
• Overhauls, repairs and adjusts engines, transmission, differentials, and clutches on heavy and diesel equipment.
• Overhauls and/or repairs all small engine equipment such as lawn care machines, chain saws, etc.
• Tunes up engines and replaces ignition parts.
• Cleans and adjusts carburetors.
• Performs rear‑end and rear axle repairs.
• Replaces or repairs wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, alternators, distributors, lights, and electrical equipment.
• Communicates and responds, orally and in writing, to Fleet Management Supervisor, with reference to information concerning department.
• Attends seminar and training schools/workshop to keep abreast on new methods for the fleet maintenance system.
• Maintains tools and equipment in safe working order.
• Actively participates in team skills training and development opportunities.
• Maintains a clean shop and safe work area.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Applicant must have the following qualifications:

• Ability to follow safety practices, as well as comprehend and apply basic safety principles when working in and around equipment and machinery.
• Possess skill in using various tools and equipment in making repairs.
• Possess mental alertness and adaptability to work routines.
• Exhibit a behavior that elevates morale and sets the example for other team members to follow.
• Possess knowledge of equipment, tools, and procedures to overhaul, repair, and diagnose gas and diesel‑powered equipment.
• Possess knowledge of operation and care of internal combustion engines.
• Possess knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
• Possess verbal perception, motor coordination, eye‑hand‑foot coordination, and manual dexterity.
• Ability to read sketches, schematics and diagrams and interpret repair manuals.
• Ability to accurately and efficiently repair vehicles.
• Ability to make mathematical computations and do clear and concise paperwork, including ordering parts and supplies.
• Ability to complete repairs correctly according to standards in the industry.
• Understand and practice the City of Woodward Personnel Policy Manual.
• Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
• Ability to read, understand and communicate fluently in the English language.
• Ability to perform work operations which permits frequent opportunity for decision‑making of minor importance and which would not only affect the operating efficiency of the individual involved but would also affect the work operations of other employees and or clientele to a slight degree.
