Job Description

The Learning Community, a vibrant public charter school that centers the voices of students, families, and teachers seeks a collaborative, dedicated speech and language pathologist passionate about supporting students to grow academically and socio-emotionally. At The Learning Community we believe that literacy empowers each individual to have a voice, take social action and assume community responsibility. We grow teacher leaders, student leaders and community leaders.

If you became a practitioner because you believe that education is the social justice issue of our time and you can see the potential for speech and language to support students as critical thinkers and key to living up to this mission, then you are a great candidate for this position!

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Providing formal and informal evaluation of speech/language skills of K-8 students. Writing detailed reports, reviewing results and providing recommendations to families and multidisciplinary team.
  • Developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEP) addressing specific goals and objectives with measurable outcomes. Monitoring student progress through collection of data. Scheduling students in support of educational plan requirements.
  • Maintaining written documentation of all evaluations, IEP goals, progress notes, and communication in a compliant and timely manner.
  • Selecting and utilizing therapeutic materials effectively with individuals and small groups of students.
  • Providing consultation to general and/or special education team members regarding student needs and best practices.
  • Facilitating social skills groups with K-8 students.
  • Participating actively, cooperatively, and constructively as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Working cooperatively and collaboratively with families, teachers, and professionals in related disciplines.
  • Assessing and maintaining adaptive and augmentative equipment to facilitate the functional communication needs of students.
  • Remaining current with appropriate instructional theory, practice, and research. Engaging in regular and strategic professional development to stay current in best practices for diverse learners.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be considered for this position,
all candidates must be certified or in the process of certification in the state of Rhode Island and must be U.S. citizens or residents or have work visas. In addition, they must demonstrate:

  • Master’s degree in the area of Speech-Language Pathology is required
  • Experience with diverse populations preferred
  • At least (1) year of experience in a school setting preferred
  • RIDE certification as a Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Licensure as a registered Speech-Language Pathologist from the Rhode Island Department of Health
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA
  • Being a reliable, collaborative, and consistently strong colleague and teammate. Our teams work closely together, share some planning time weekly, and build on each other’s insights and strengths with students to meet their shared achievement goals. To excel at the Learning Community, they must be great at communicating with others, working through conflict, supporting other team members, and asking for the support needed.

They also need to keep their commitments - showing up for themselves, their students, and their colleagues as they promise they will.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, judgment, and resilience. As an educator in an urban school setting, things don’t always go to plan: a lesson fails with students, a facilities issue happens, a parent expresses feedback in a rough way, a policy you don’t love gets introduced - it happens. Team members that thrive at the Learning Community are excellent at rebounding from setbacks, shaking off a mistake, and learning and problem-solving to meet their goals.

They bring creativity, problem-solving and an adaptable approach to most challenges, while keeping student safety and respect for our students, parents, and school community front and center in their choices.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and communication skills - especially in conflict or for trickier decisions. The Learning Community aspires to be a…
