Title: Special Education Teacher:
Extended School Year (ESY)

Qualifications:
  • R. I. Certification as a Special Education Teacher (M/M)
  • R. I. Certification as a Special Educator (Elementary/Middle or Middle/Secondary)/Elementary
  • Background and academic training in specialized instructional practices and strategies.
  • Familiarity with and expertise in various approaches to remediating reading, math, and written language deficits.

    Job Goal:

    To provide extended school year special education instruction as per the Rhode Island Regulations.

    Performance Responsibilities:
  • Provides extended school year (ESY) instruction to students on IEPs who qualify for ESY.
  • Implements instructional objectives, interprets pupil program needs and accommodates individual learning styles as specified under ESY-pertinent areas of Individual Educational Plans.
  • Prepares an ESY summary report for each student provided with ESY instruction and forwards that report to student’s next year’s teacher and a copy to the PPSD office.
  • Completes ESY IEP Progress Notes within Tie Net before the end of the ESY term.
  • Demonstrates competencies in curriculum analysis, as well as selection and implementation of appropriate instructional methodologies to ensure concentrated emphasis, as intended to remediate diagnosed areas of deficits for students with disabilities.
  • Maintains professional standards by remaining informed regarding current special education instructional approaches and technology.
  • Maintains sensitivity to variations in student abilities and learning styles to facilitate mastery of curricula objectives.
  • Organizes the learning environment to optimally accommodate the special needs of participating students.
  • Maintains all compliance-related records as required.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding pupil status and student records unless disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law.
  • Demonstrates a functional knowledge of The Rhode Island Regulations of the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education Governing the Special Education of Children with Disabilities, January 2008;
    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act; and the Americans with Disabilities Act; and the RIDE Individualized Education Program (IEP) Guidebooks.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of behavior intervention techniques and is able to apply behavior modification programs to alleviate and control individual and group behavioral issues.
  • Assumes all other responsibilities as might be assigned by the Director of Pupil Personnel Services or Building Administrator.
