The Middle School Counselor plays a vital role in supporting the academic, social‑emotional, and personal development of students in grades 6–8. The counselor helps students develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to become successful learners, responsible citizens, and healthy individuals.
The counselor collaborates closely with students, families, teachers, administrators, and support personnel to create a positive school climate that promotes student growth, resilience, well‑being, and academic achievement. The counselor serves as an advocate for all students and works proactively to identify and address barriers to learning.
It is not an essential prerequisite that all employees be Catholic; however, all employees are expected to respect the teachings of the Church and ensure that all areas of responsibility are carried out consistently with the school's Catholic mission. Triple‑I background check required when employment is conditionally offered.
Social‑Emotional Development and Student Support- Provide individual and small‑group counseling to address social, emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs.
- Assist students in developing healthy coping skills, emotional regulation strategies, conflict resolution skills, and positive peer relationships.
- Promote student wellness, resilience, self‑awareness, self‑advocacy, and positive decision‑making.
- Support students experiencing academic stress, family transitions, grief, anxiety, social challenges, or other personal concerns that impact school success.
- Coordinate appropriate interventions when student safety concerns arise and make referrals to outside agencies and mental health providers when additional support is needed.
- Participate in crisis response and intervention efforts as needed.
- Monitor student academic progress and identify barriers that may impact learning.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to develop strategies that promote student achievement.
- Assist students in developing organizational, study, time‑management, and goal‑setting skills.
- Support students during key educational transitions, including entry into middle school and preparation for high school.
- Review student performance data and implement interventions to support academic growth.
- Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive developmental middle school counseling curriculum aligned with school and counseling program goals.
- Deliver classroom lessons focused on: social‑emotional learning, self‑awareness and self‑management, relationship‑building skills, responsible decision‑making, character development, bullying prevention, digital citizenship, academic success skills, career awareness and exploration, goal setting and future planning.
- Utilize data to assess program effectiveness and student outcomes.
- Build positive relationships with parents and guardians to support student growth and development.
- Communicate regularly regarding student progress, concerns, and available resources.
- Partner with families to address academic, social‑emotional, and behavioral challenges.
- Provide parent education and resources on adolescent development, mental health, academic planning, and student wellness.
- Facilitate meetings between families, teachers, and support personnel as needed.
- Consult with teachers regarding student concerns and effective classroom strategies.
- Collaborate with faculty to promote positive student behavior and engagement.
- Provide resources and professional support related to social‑emotional learning and student development.
- Assist teachers in identifying and responding to students experiencing academic or emotional difficulties.
