Job Description

The Health Careers work‑based or laboratory instructor works directly under the Principal of WHS/WACTC in conjunction with health careers program teachers and is responsible for developing students’ understanding of the Health Careers industry, building technical skills, and preparing them for college and career readiness in the 21st century.

Responsibilities
  • Implement effective lesson plans and ensure they are available for substitutes and administrators.
  • Use the yearly course syllabus for students and parents.
  • Demonstrate occupational materials, equipment, tools, technology, and processes using models, mock‑ups, sketches, and other instructional aids.
  • Maintain standards of student behavior for an orderly, safe, and productive project‑based classroom.
  • Control storage and use of tools, materials, and property to prevent loss or abuse; request repairs as needed.
  • Evaluate each student’s performance, knowledge, and skills using a standardized, competency‑based curriculum.
  • Provide individual and group instruction in lab(s) and workplace settings appropriate to student needs and activity requirements.
  • Maintain professional competence through professional development activities provided by the district, state, or national organizations.
  • Keep complete and accurate records of student grades and attendance; inform classroom teachers in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers on individual student progress and plan of action as needed.
  • Supervise the conduct and welfare of all students on school premises and during work‑based training.
  • Work with classroom teachers to revise and align curricula to industry and Common Core State Standards.
  • Integrate technology (computer diagnostics, laptops, and projectors) into the Health Careers program curricula.
  • Maintain and strengthen existing Health Careers partnerships.
  • Educate students on proper procedures and practices of health care professionals in workplace settings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned and are consistent with the position.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
  • Current Rhode Island Department of Health Registered Nurse license and completion of professional development every 2 years.
  • Must hold or be willing to pursue a CTE RIDE Health Instructors certification.
  • Experience in long‑term care.
  • Proficiency in using computer‑based systems, including Google and Microsoft products.
Preferred Qualifications
  • American Red Cross certified trainer in First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • Previous experience as an instructor or teacher.
Job Requirements
  • RIDE Certification Criteria:
    Five years of work experience for the specific career and technical area if holding a high school diploma; three years if holding an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Appropriate level of post‑secondary education sought by RIDE. Demonstration of meeting content and pedagogical competencies as prescribed by the appropriate RIDE‑approved national professional association.
  • Individuals who hold advanced state‑issued licenses or advanced industry certificates are not required to complete subject matter testing; however, any work experience or degree completed more than ten (10) years prior to the date of the application must meet subject matter testing requirements regardless of other licenses held.
  • This position is grant‑funded for the 2025‑2026 school year.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
