The Preschool teacher provides developmentally appropriate instruction, care and supervision to preschool students while planning curriculum and collaborating with teaching staff. Builds strong relationships with families through consistent, positive communication and keeps leadership informed of student and classroom needs. Mentors college students, ensures compliance with licensing and training requirements, documents student progress, and supports school operations through professional development, meetings, and event coverage.
Responsibilities- Provide evidence‑based, developmentally appropriate instructional practices, care and supervision to preschool students.
- Plan curriculum, team‑teach, lead projects, and prepare classroom materials.
- Communicate positively and effectively with parents, including daily contact at drop‑off and pick‑up, parent‑teacher conferences, fall parent meetings, phone calls, class pot‑lucks, holiday and end‑of‑year parties.
- Inform the Director of important child/family issues, material needs, and other pertinent information.
- Oversee and mentor college students in the preschool program, fostering a welcoming and supportive learning environment and providing ongoing feedback and professional support.
- Maintain required state licensing training in CPR, first aid, communicable disease prevention, child‑abuse prevention, and continuing education; keep fingerprinting and medical exams current.
- Provide extra classroom coverage during the first week of school, winter/spring breaks, visitation days, summer camp, and other special events as needed.
- Complete 6 hours of professional development each year, attend state or national conferences, and participate in teachers’ workshops.
- Document child observations, parent‑teacher conference summaries, and end‑of‑year child reports.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university; one to two years of related experience and/or training.
- Ability to create structured, engaging environments while managing routines, transitions, and behavior in a calm, nurturing and consistent manner for children aged three to five years old.
- Knowledge of early childhood development to support social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.
- Ability to design engaging, play‑based, nature‑inspired and developmentally appropriate lessons that promote learning through exploration.
- Capacity to respond to children with empathy, regulate emotions, and build strong, supportive relationships.
- Observe children using anecdotal records and authentic assessment.
- Use data to guide instruction and support individual needs.
- Knowledge of how to teach through:
- Evidence‑based literacy instruction aligned with Science of Reading practices.
- Guided exploration.
- Play‑based, nature‑inspired learning.
- Soft computer and technology skills to communicate via email with parents, create parent information flyers, and produce monthly newsletters.
- Observe safety and security procedures; work with integrity and ethics.
The work environment involves standing, walking, running, sitting in small chairs and on the floor, fine motor skills, speaking, hearing, and sight. Lifting may be necessary up to 50 pounds. The role requires moderate to loud noise from children and play.
