Position: PACKAGING ENGINEER

The Wooster Brush Company was established in 1851 and is one of the oldest manufacturers of paint applicators in the USA. The Wooster Brush Company produces more than 2,000 high quality and innovative products to support the growing professional and DIY painter’s market. The packaging engineer will manage and implement both new and improved packaging concepts, designs and assembly methods suited for consumer products;

both professional and homeowner quality. This individual will be required to work across multiple functions (Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Sales, and Marketing) to ensure the successful launch of new products and improvements to legacy products.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging containers:
    Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special-handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for container.
  • Responsible for management of the entire packaging development cycle:
    • Conception and design
    • Prototyping
    • Testing; both internal lab testing and shipping trial testing
    • Cost estimation
    • Product documentation and quality specifications
    • Prepare capital funding requests
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple disciplines:
    • Product Development
    • Manufacturing Engineering
    • Sales and Marketing
    • Purchasing
    • Production
    • Print Shop
    • Art Department
    • Quality
  • Assist in the development and administration of a multimillion dollar annual capital budget.
  • Preparation and review of capital funding requests.
  • Periodic review of active projects - compared to projected schedule, performance and budget.
  • Keep current with new packaging technology and methods.
  • Develop and manage cost saving initiatives.
  • Evaluate and suggest modifications (as required) to existing packaging assembly machinery due to product changes or company requirements.
  • Provide periodic management summary reports.
  • Assist Manufacturing Engineering with development of assembly equipment and fixtures.
  • Submit Capital Appropriation Request for project approval.
  • Review and approve drawings submitted by vendors.
  • Complete required documentation for product introduction.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project.
  • Working knowledge of PC based 2D and 3D-CAD systems.

Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree in engineering, preferably in ASMET.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Three or more years of successful experience working as a packaging engineer, preferably in a consumer products environment.
Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Short term circumstances may require variance to these hours of work.)

Travel

Low to Moderate travel can be expected for this position. Some travel could be overnight and/or international.

Work Environment

This job operates in both a professional office environment and a manufacturing facility. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may experience certain tasks or work areas that require hearing protection to be worn. The employee may also be working in areas where fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock and vibration are present - appropriate personal protection equipment must be worn in those areas.
