Job Title:Research Technician
Department:FAES | Horticulture and Crop Science
The core duties of this position are to support the applied research program of the OSU Vegetable Production Systems Laboratory through operating under the supervision of the program faculty and staff leads.
Activities and duties would include establishing, caring for, maintaining, modifying, and removing plants, plots, temporary structures, and other program components and participating in general applied research activities including data collection and entry (sample collection, preparation, and analysis and data entry). Activities and duties would be completed in offices, laboratories, greenhouses, high tunnels, and open fields.
Duties would be performed individually and/or as part of a group including members of the program and campus personnel. Performing duties would involve keeping accurate records and maintaining and operating selected equipment common to applied vegetable research completed in office, laboratory, greenhouse, high tunnel, and open field settings.
Minimum Education Requirement: high school diploma, no experience required.

bachelor’s degree or 1-4 years of relevant experience preferred.
Required Skills:
Familiarity with: (1) vegetable crop management, including using sustainable-organic approaches, seeding, transplanting, pruning and trellising, transplant production, nutrient and irrigation management, pest, weed, and disease control, irrigation system setup and management, and the use of films, fabrics and protective structures, (2) experimentation, and (3) workplace safety practices.
Ability to: (4) apply principles to solve problems, (5) help maintain a friendly atmosphere in the work unit, (6) perform working alone or as a member of a team, (7) contribute to the successful completion of research studies, (8) calculate fractions, decimals, and percents, (9) read, copy and complete routine forms, (10) gather, collate, and classify samples and information according to established methods, (11) use common sense and knowledge of the vegetable program goals and objectives to carry out written and oral instructions;
(12) show physical fitness including in outdoor agricultural settings and situations; (13) communicate effectively orally and in writing; and (14) apply what is demonstrated, instructed, taught, and learned.
Skill in: (15) operating equipment and tools commonly used in office, laboratory, greenhouse, high tunnel, greenhouse, and open field settings, (16) completing routine operations common in applied research office, laboratory, greenhouse, high tunnel, greenhouse, and open field settings.
